Newcastle United’s summer rebuild has come under increasing scrutiny after an uneven start to the season, with questions about whether sporting director Ross Wilson’s position could be affected by how the club’s recruitment has performed.
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh wrote that there is currently no indication Newcastle’s ownership is unhappy with Wilson, despite some fan debate surrounding a summer in which approximately £300 million was spent on eight players.
“There has been no indication from ownership
that they are unhappy with Wilson — the noises are quite the opposite, given his remit extends far beyond first-team recruitment,” Waugh wrote.
In his favor, at least financially, is the fact that Wilson also oversaw significant outgoing business, with Newcastle recouping around £245 million through the sales of Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
Waugh noted that Wilson and CEO David Hopkinson remain closely aligned on the club’s strategy, which centered on recruiting younger players with long-term upside and the expected growing pains. Newcastle also recognizes the value of having some executive stability after considerable turnover at sporting-director level since the takeover.
“Wilson and Hopkinson have a very strong relationship and they were fully aligned on the summer strategy,” Waugh wrote. “The pair remain convinced their approach is the right one, given the financial position the club finds itself in.”
All that said, the situation doesn’t mean Wilson is beyond scrutiny. Waugh stressed that Newcastle’s current season is being viewed internally as one of transition, but the expectation is that clear progress must be visible by next season. For now, however, Wilson appears to retain the confidence of both the ownership and senior leadership.
How much responsibility do you place on Wilson for Newcastle’s current problems, and should he be given another full window to prove the strategy works? Share your thoughts in the comments.
