The Michigan Wolverines currently have one of the highest ranked recruits of all time on the roster in Bryce Underwood, but you can never have too many good quarterbacks. The new staff is doing what it can right now to set itself up for success in the 2027 class, even after a decommitment earlier this week.
Michigan on the hunt for new QB
Michigan needs to find a new quarterback in the 2027 class, as previous commit Peter Bourque decided to open his recruitment back up earlier this week. The coaching staff is starting to focus in on
some targets, and there are a couple of four-stars to keep an eye on.
The first quarterback to watch here is four-star Dane Weber (ranked No. 360 overall). He was just offered by the Wolverines on Wednesday, and according to a report from On3’s Ethan McDowell ($), Weber has interest in Michigan. Utah was his first DI offer, so there is clearly some familiarity here between Weber and Michigan’s new coaching staff. Oregon is another school to watch for him as well.
Another name that has been floating around is four-star Kamden Lopati. He has been committed to Illinois since July, and he has the better rating out of these two quarterbacks as the No. 149 overall prospect in the country. But despite the commitment to Illinois, Lopati still has interest in Michigan thanks to Whittingham.
“His passion for the game of football, play the game the right way, and his genuine love for his players,” he told McDowell back in December.
Michigan needs to find a quarterback in the 2027 class, and these guys are the most likely options right now.
Five-star QB breaks down Michigan interest
The next star from Michigan at the quarterback position might be 2028 five-star Donald Tabron II. As a five-star and the No. 28 overall prospect in the nation, the 6-foot-3.5, 180-pounder from Detroit’s Cass Tech is getting interest from numerous top programs across the country.
But a big thing for a lot of recruits right now is seeing how Michigan will look under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. The offense has been an issue the past two years, and it seems like a lot of guys on that side of the ball are in wait-and-see mode.
“They are really excited about the new team that they have at Michigan, about the guys that are there — Bryce and Andrew Marsh and Rod Moore,” Tabron told On3’s McDowell ($). “I’m excited to really see how that program goes in the next few years.”
Tabron has already seen a lot of good things from Michigan, and one thing that specifically stood out was the environment inside the Big House when he visited last fall.
“It’s a different environment, going up there and being in, basically, a bowl,” he said. “It’s loud. Can’t really hear no matter what game you’re at. I went to the Ohio State game, and that was one of the more electric games, just from the crowd, I’ve been to. So to be able to experience it, especially being from the home state of Michigan, is almost a different feeling, and I’m grateful for it.”
New RB target emerges for Tony Alford
A new target in the 2027 class at the running back position is TJ Lewis. He was offered by running backs coach Tony Alford earlier this month, and is now expected to take his first trip to Ann Arbor in the near future.
He is set to visit Michigan on March 24, according to On3’s McDowell ($). Michigan is Lewis’ dream school, and there are a lot of signs indicating he could be a candidate to wind up in the Wolverines’ class. He isn’t going to end up being the best running back in his class like Savion Hiter, but if Alford wants him, Michigan fans should be excited.
Lewis is currently not ranked as a prospect, but that is expected to change soon since he has other offers from schools like Penn State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota and more. The 6-foot, 215-pounder hails from Bolingbrook, Illinois.
