Bayern Munich has not exactly been through a tough period so far this season — beginning with sixteen straight wins and navigating a choppy phase following its Champions League defeat to Arsenal with calm.
Part of that has been the team’s knack for powering back after early setbacks, and that in-game resilience is evident in the way the team is approaching the season as a whole.
It is a perfect reflection of head coach Vincent Kompany.
“Everyone experiences difficult moments. The key is not to hide away, but to use them to your advantage,” Kompany said in a late fall interview from club magazine Säbener 51, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Stick out your chest, search for the truth — that’s what I demand. I want the group to believe in itself and its path.
“And the individual too. I myself never had a straight path; there were lots of ups and downs. But I’ve always trusted myself. I want to see the same thing from my team.”
Kompany’s experiences as a player have helped earn him the unquestioned respect of the Bayern locker room, which is no easy feat. And while he has dismissed the notion that he wants his own identity reflected in the way his sides play, there is an unmistakable quality of ‘Kompany-ball’ about how Bayern goes about its business.
