For the first time in history, Bayern Munich defeated Atlético Madrid in their Spanish fortress of a stadium. Bayern had played at the Metropolitano on four previous occasions, leaving with two draws and two losses. Tonight, an emphatic 2-0 win sent a message to the rest of Europe that even a depleted Bayern squad can win anywhere.
In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), the living legend dropped a coy response about returning to play the final professional match of his career in the Champions
League final, which will be hosted at the Metropolitano.
“Yes, absolutely,” said Neuer. “And perhaps winning here now is also a good omen. Of course, it’s a tough, challenging road for all of us, for all the teams who are usually favourites and contenders to make it to the final here. We believe we can do it. We have what it takes, and we’ll give everything to make it happen.”
Neuer plans to retire at the end of the 2026/27 season, hoping his career concludes with a third and final Champions League trophy if Bayern can survive the treacherous journey through the knockout stages. The final is set for June 5, 2027.
