It’s been a year to remember Syracuse Orange taco lovers in the 315.
There have been a combined 12 men’s and women’s home games since our last update. If you went to at least one of those, chances are you walked away with a free Taco Bell Crunchy Beef taco voucher, as the Orange hit the target score in 11 of those contests.
Both Bellringer crowns are coming down to the wire with just three combined home games left. Let’s get you caught up to speed on all the action:
Men’s Bellringers
Two new faces jumped
into the race and hit the 70-point mark in William Kyle (free throw, Cal) and Tyler Betsey (three-pointer, Florida State), but it’s too little too late to take home the crown.
With two games left, it looks like this year’s winner is between J.J. Starling and Kiyan Anthony. Starling actually had an outright lead at one point after layups in back-to-back games against Virginia Tech and Miami. The heir to Melo responded in a big way, getting the two to go plus the foul down the stretch against SMU. Look how excited the crowd got for their free taco!! (half-joking)
Expect Starling or Anthony to secure this year’s crown if either of them can tally their fourth bellringing of the season against North Carolina or Pitt.
Women’s Bellringers
The women have also been on fire in bringing food to your taste buds, covering the Taco Spread in each of their last five games. When it comes to who converts the taco-tastic shot, Felisha Legette-Jack’s squad shares the ball better than any team around and is now up to eight different players with at least one free taco delivery.
Laila Phelia wasn’t even on the chart in the last update, but suddenly has the chance to snatch a share of the Bellringer crown after drilling a three to put the Orange over the 65-point threshold (in the third quarter!) against Georgia Tech, followed by a free throw against Louisville.
She’ll have to be the one to score the 65th point in SU’s final home game versus Boston College to make it a three-way tie with three Bellringings each.
If Phelia can’t pull off the historic comeback, look for Dominique Darius or Sophie Burrows to take home this year’s title. The former got her second and third bellringings of the season after making free throws against Florida State and Stanford, while the latter tied things up at three with a clutch layup in the Orange’s last home game versus Clemson (nearly the exact same situation as Anthony on the men’s side).
Burrows definitely has momentum after her bellringing against the Tigers, and can definitely build off her ACC Player of the Week honors by cementing her legacy and claiming this year’s crown against the Eagles.
Call your shot time: who are your picks for this season’s Bellringer title(s)?
