If I told you that Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin would not be able to play for the Washington Mystics tonight against the Connecticut Sun, I wouldn’t blame anyone who would think that the Mystics would lose this game. Even if it’s on the road against the league’s worst team.
But if there’s one thing that this Washington team is capable of doing, it’s that the Mystics will not lose to a team that dropped to 2-14. Washington won 88-81 tonight, without two of their top posts. Sonia Citron led the Mystics with 26
points and also grabbed 12 rebounds though she didn’t make any three pointers. Lauren Betts also got the start where scored 13 points. Michaela Onyenwere added 22 points.
Connecticut shot relatively decently compared to the Mystics where Leila Lacan and Aneesah Morrow scored 11 points each. But Washington made 29-of-30 free throws tonight while the Sun only made 15-of-23 free throws themselves. This proved to be the difference tonight.
Overall, I’m happy with this win, which gets Washington to 6-7 for the season. And no, that wasn’t the meme. Washington never trailed in the second half and the Sun never established control in the game. Not bad considering who was out tonight.
The Mystics’ next game is on Friday when they play against the New York Liberty on the road. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. ET. See you then.
