Now that the bye week is here, it’s time to update you on former Jets players and how they’ve been faring with their current teams. Having looked at offensive and defensive players over the past few days,
we’ll be concluding with a look at special teamers today.
As ever, this list is intended to be exhaustive, but if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments.
Kickers
Cairo Santos, Bears
Santos has only played in six games due to injury but he has kicked well, with only three missed kicks all year. One was costly, though, as he missed a fourth quarter field goal in a three-point loss to the Vikings.
Chase McLaughlin, Bucs
McLaughlin has actually missed five kicks so far this year, but he’s had some impressive moments including game-winners against the Jets and Seahawks and a successful 65-yarder.
Jason Myers, Seahawks
Myers has missed four field goals but is perfect on 27 extra points. He had a game-winner against the Cardinals.
Spencer Shrader, Colts
Shrader won the Colts job and made a game-winner over the Broncos (after his long miss had been negated by a leverage penalty). He missed his first ever kick the following week and then got injured in week five so he’s currently on injured reserve.
Riley Patterson, Dolphins
Patterson was the temporary replacement for Jason Sanders but Sanders is still on injured reserve. He’s been good, with only two misses in 34 kicks, although one of those misses came in a game Miami lost by two.
Eddy Pineiro, 49ers
Pineiro was a late addition in San Francisco but he’s a perfect 19-for-19 on field goals, although he did miss an extra point. He had game-winners over the Cardinals and Rams.
Punters
Braden Mann, Eagles
Mann is having a terrific season as he has a gross average of over 52 yards and a net average of over 42.
Thomas Morstead, 49ers
Morstead has been less impressive than Mann with a gross average of 45 and a net average of under 38.
Kai Kroeger, Saints
The undrafted rookie Kroeger has put up some disappointing numbers with a net average of under 36 yards. He also had one blocked.
Return Specialists
Braxton Berrios, Texans
Berrios has only played in a few games, but he returned three punts for 25 yards and a couple of kickoffs. He seems to have lost the punt return role to Jaylin Noel.
Xavier Gipson, Eagles
Gipson has been relatively productive in Philadelphia following a short stint with the Giants. He has 36 yards on three punt returns and is averaging 27 yards per kickoff return.
Kalif Raymond, Lions
Raymond had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown for the Lions, although he’s only averaged 5.8 yards per return on his other 13 runbacks. He has returned two kickoffs for 60 yards.
Greg Dortch, Cardinals
Dortch has done a solid job on returns with a punt return average of over 12 yards and a kickoff return average of 27.
Brandon Codrington, Bills
Codrington has been a bit of a disappointment with a punt return average of below six yards per return. His kickoff return is just under 27. He also had one fumble. He was inactive on Sunday.
Malachi Corley, Browns
Corley has been pretty ineffective on his five kickoff returns with a long of just 24.
Raheem Mostert, Raiders
Mostert has done an excellent job on kickoffs with a league-leading 32.4 yards per return average. In Sunday’s overtime loss to the Jaguars, he broke two returns of longer than 50 yards.
Other Special Teams Contributors
Most of the top ex-Jets special teams contributors in coverage are linebackers, led by Seattle’s Chazz Surratt, Neville Hewitt of the Giants and Del’Shawn Phillips of the Chargers with nine tackles each. Carolina’s Claud Cherelus and Washington’s Nick Bellore have five each. Bellore, who led the league last year, also has a forced fumble.
Non-linebackers who have had some production include Chiefs wide receiver Jason Brownlee and Steelers safety Chuck Clark, with three tackles each. Clark’s teammate Brandin Echols had a key muffed punt recovery on Sunday.
Finally, Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris had a crucial field goal block for the Browns and Commanders defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw also blocked a field goal for the Commanders.
