A cool piece of news hit yesterday (Sept. 23), but you can’t blog everything the second you see it, ya know? Enough about my problems, that’s not what you’re here for. OH YEAH…
Deadline had the scoop first: Along with his producing partner Johnny Ryan Jr., Kenan Thompson of Good Burger and SNL fame is developing a movie about the life of the “Macho Man”, Randy Savage.
It’s early days, and a lot of “in development” projects never see the light of day (e.g. the Hulk Hogan biopic Chris Hemsworth was attached
to years ago). But if we ever get to buy a ticket to this one, there’s reasons to be optimistic. However it turns out, we expect it will be done with care and respect for Savage and his legacy.
That’s because the project, titled simply Macho, is working off a script completed by Randy’s brother Lanny Poffo with Eric Shapiro before Poffo’s death in early 2023. And because Ryan Jr. and Thompson are lifelong Macho Man fans.
In statements provided to Deadline, the duo whose production company is called Artists For Artists (AFA) said…
Ryan Jr.: “Macho man Randy Savage was the greatest showman of all time and the OG bad boy of entertainment. His outfits were as electric as his personality and he’s so much more than an artist, he’s an icon. Lanny and Eric did a great job capturing this story and the crazy 80s wrestling era that turnt wrestling figures into life long pop culture icons.”
Thompson: “Beyond excited for this one!! Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen!!!”
There are more details about the production in Deadline’s article here. Me? I’m just wondering if this scene from the 1999 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards between a young All That era Thompson and Savage will make it into Macho…
