Murray or Wentz? Flores vs Caleb? Vikings-Bears keys that decide Sunday. — On The Real Forno Show, Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano mapped Minnesota’s path to 2-0 in the NFC North before Sunday’s noon CT game at Soldier Field. The Vikings 1st & SKOL episode starts with Kyler Murray’s concussion and the NFL protocol, then splits on the only question that matters Friday: if independent doctors clear him, do you play the starter or protect the next 15 weeks with Carson Wentz?
Forness would sit
him. “I wouldn’t play him,” he said, citing stacked concussions, Christian Darrisaw’s 2022 relapse, and the unofficial three-strikes calendar. “I’d rather him just miss one than miss three or four.” Stefano would play the listed starter. “Kevin O’Connell has said he’s the starter, so if he’s healthy you play the starter.” He added the cold front-office line: “He’s a one-year rental.” Forness pushed back: treat Murray like a rental and you may not get him back if he plays well. Both agreed KOC will follow the neurologists.
The on-field fight is where they split again. Forness called Brian Flores vs Caleb Williams “100% the key to the game.” Williams, he said, is “more of an artist than he is a mathematician,” capable of Mahomes-Allen-Lamar throws and tight-end thickness in a 220-pound frame. In four games against Minnesota since Williams arrived, Chicago has scored 82 points (20.5 per game), with about 15 of those in garbage time. Flores’ Week 1 mix vs Green Bay was heavy base (46.3%) and two-high (67.4%). Soldier Field historically cuts the blitz: 44.4% and 40.9% in Chicago the last two visits, versus 60.0% and 77.8% at U.S. Bank. Stefano’s label from last year still fits: “We called him Houdini.” Win condition: collapse the pocket, wrap up, and don’t let the magic act walk out the back door. Darnell Wright (knee), Braxton Jones, Theo Benedet, and Joe Thuney are the pressure points.
Stefano’s counter-key is Kevin O’Connell vs Dennis Allen. “When it comes to Kevin O’Connell and how he schemes against that Allen defense, I believe that’s gonna be the key.” Mason is on IR with a thumb fracture. Aaron Jones and DeeJay Dallas have to be impactful, not volume-obsessed. Forness wants Addison featured if Jaylon Johnson camps on Justin Jefferson. Johnson, asked if he enjoys the rivalry, said he does not, “because I don’t like playing against the best.” Forness also flagged Tyrique Stevenson, rookie Dillon Thieneman, and Malik Muhammad as beatable. Minnesota run defense graded first in EPA per rush allowed in Week 1 (−0.43) when the numbers were even.
