San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided injury updates on wide receivers Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson.
Evans left Week 2 with a hip injury. Despite leaving, Evans stayed on the sideline with his helmet. That’s usually a sign that a player can return. Shanahan said if the game were different, Evans could have returned.
As for Robinson, Shanahan said his injury looked like a high-ankle sprain, “so, unfortunate there.” According to the reporters on hand, Robinson walked out of the locker
room with a slight limp, but he did not have any protective devices on his ankle/foot.
Here’s what Shanahan said about whether the team would need to add another wide receiver: “We’ll see. It has been unfortunate. It was big losing Stribling last week. You guys know how big it was losing Ricky over the summer. Then losing D-Rob today was huge. Christian Kirk’s got a couple of weeks before he can come back.
But we still have a group of guys out there that we have played with that have done things. I’m sure we’ll have to add somebody, whether it’s to the practice squad or to the roster, but those are things we’ll start discussing tonight, and hopefully have an answer by Wednesday.”
Shanahan smirked and said, “No,” when asked if Brandon Aiyuk could be an option.
Rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. has an ankle injury. Shanahan said it looks like a similar injury to Robinson’s. He couldn’t confirm it, but believes the Niners may have lost another player for multiple weeks to a high-ankle sprain.
He also said the 49ers had contacted Leonard Floyd and “a couple of people” as soon as they lost Sam Okuayinonu.
We can expect the 49ers to work out multiple players in the coming days, and potentially add one or two to the practice squad or active roster.
