Real Madrid legend talked about how playing with Roberto Carlos made ‘everything easier’ for him during their time together at the club, he said to AS in an interview. He was asked about what it was like
to play with him and what he learned from the Brazilian legend, to which he said: “When he was there, I just wanted to watch him train and play. That was enough. He helped me in every way. I still talk to him, and when I see him, I get nervous. Having him as my idol made it much easier.”
Marcelo on Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo
“They’re incredible footballers, and even more so as people. I’ve watched them since they were 18, like Fede and Militão. I see them as truly great footballers. They’re no longer just promising talents. At Brazil and Real Madrid, there’s a lot of pressure, and you have to produce every year. They’re fantastic and have a great future ahead.”
Marcelo on his playing style
“I’ve always been a left-back with the soul of an attacker. I’ve always wanted to go forward because a dribble is much better than a tackle. Scoring a goal or providing an assist is always better than winning the ball back.
“I played my own style of football, which has always been very joyful, very happy… The same passion I had at the Bernabéu, I have playing in my living room with my children. I give it my all and I don’t want to lose; it’s in my blood.”
Marcelo on Xabi Alonso and Vinicius Jr
“I don’t watch the games and didn’t see the hug between Vinicius Jr and Xabi Alonso. I have no idea what’s going on. But Xabi is a great friend and coach. Both for what he’s done and what he’s doing at Real Madrid.”
Marcelo on the dribblers he likes
“There’s a player in Juvenil A called Gabri. He’s top, I like him. He’ll probably make it to the first team because he dribbles incredibly well. I also love Kvaratskhelia.”
Marcelo on being called the best left-back of all time
“It’s not that I don’t like it, I understand people. I say that Roberto Carlos is the best left-back in history and maybe he doesn’t like it. Or Sergio Ramos is the best centre-back. I’ve always been very calm about this because in football you don’t play alone. It’s the team. When you talk about my achievements, it’s Real Madrid. I was a Real Madrid player. The title is ours, but you don’t win it alone. I can’t compare myself to anyone else or think that I’m the best ever.”
Marcelo on Kylian Mbappé
“I love Kylian Mbappé. He’s amazing. I wanted to play with him, but he came a little too late.”
Marcelo on being a manager
“No, no. I already have enough with my kids, watching them makes me nervous. And when I watch Real Madrid with them, the same. That’s why I don’t like watching football anymore. I never knew anything about tactics, how am I supposed to explain a 4-3-3 to a player? Too much for me.”
