Manager Vincent Kompany has provided an important update ahead of Bayern Munich’s upcoming match, confirming that Manuel Neuer will not train today after feeling discomfort in his foot. When asked who would start between the posts tomorrow, the FC Bayern head coach made it clear that a decision appears to have been made.
“Manuel Neuer felt something in his foot and will not train today. So the answer is clear,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “He felt it after the Augsburg game and then
it developed a bit. I don’t think it’s anything bad, but he didn’t train yesterday and today so it doesn’t make sense to take any risks.”
That strongly suggests that Jonas Urbig will get the nod, potentially giving the young goalkeeper another opportunity to demonstrate why Bayern Munich views him as the long-term successor to Neuer.
Urbig has already gained valuable experience working alongside the legendary German international, and the club’s hierarchy has repeatedly expressed confidence in his development. Bayern president Herbert Hainer has praised Urbig as one of the best young goalkeepers around, while Kompany has also spoken positively about his potential.
Of course, Neuer’s situation will be one to monitor, particularly given his importance to Bayern Munich and the need to manage his fitness carefully throughout the season. The club will not want to take unnecessary risks with its captain, especially with a demanding schedule across the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
If Neuer is truly unavailable against Viking, the focus will shift to Urbig and his ability to handle the responsibility. Every opportunity matters for the young goalkeeper as he continues learning from one of the best in the business.
Bayern Munich may have found their long-term No. 1, but facing Viking could serve as another crucial test of Urbig’s readiness to take on that mantle.
