There has been some great discussion over the last few weeks in our Brew Hoop community about different ways to “rank the roster.” Of course, the criteria for our annual Ranking the Roster series remained the same: rank who you would in a high-stakes situation—like the playoffs—this season. However, that is not the only way to rank the roster.
We saw Harms post a really interesting ranking in The Feed based on “asset valuation and an element of contemplating an expansion draft.” Similarly, I dropped
my (completely subjective) trade value rankings on Wednesday. This week’s Reacts best reflected that roster-ranking method—granted, the scope was much narrower given we were only looking for who the community thinks leads the team in trade value. In any event, we have the results.
As the graphic shows, Rollins won convincingly, with respondents pointing to his raw ability, paired with his age and contract, as the reasons why.
BenDrankin3000: I tend to think Rollins just because he is young, proven, on a cheap contract for one more year and could help a team trying to win now, but Burries I think has a ton of trade value as well. That said, these are three of the least likely to be traded, although I can see the case for trading them. Perhaps a better question is of the most likely to be traded, who has the highest value? I would say that’s Herro, the only one on the team that’s been an all star (which is also likely to hold for this season.)
naveed2000s: At this moment, Rollins. Could become either Ware or Burries very soon. I don’t think you even truly entertain trading any of them this season, unless there’s some under 25 established star that comes available (and even then, I think Burries is pretty untouchable for the foreseeable future). I’d trade Rollins first of the three, if I had to choose.
That said, there is a great case to be made for Burries, as R984 outlined:
I think Burries. Rollins played great at times last year, but is a pending free agent, and a small guard, and has had injury issues. So, I think a top 10 pick in a draft regarded as being really deep, who then looked amazing at SL, probably has more value as a trade asset. The controllable contract is huge in today’s NBA imo. The other side of the coin could be that obviously he could be a bust. But, I bet we couldn’t have gotten the #8 or #9 pick for Rollins in this past draft. Or put another way, I’d trade Rollins right now if we could get another version of Burries in return.
Finally, VoltantheDestroyer offered a fair point as to why the answer could reasonably be someone else:
I can see an injury-plagued team in a win-now situation paying big at the deadline for one of our vets with Herro and Turner heading the list dependent on need.
