Hansi Flick is said to be prepared to commit his long-term future to FC Barcelona as the club moves into the final stages of a potential title-winning week.
Following recent meetings in the city between his agent, Pini Zahavi, and the board, a verbal agreement is reportedly in place to extend his contract by an additional season through June 2028. With Barça ahead of Real Madrid by 11 points in La Liga, the idea is to mathematically secure the league trophy just before announcing Flick’s renewal.
According to Diario SPORT, the squad is pushing to wrap up the title this weekend rather than waiting for the upcoming Clásico.
Barcelona could confirm La Liga if they win their game against Osasuna and Real Madrid draw or lose to Espanyol. The Catalans would be winning the trophy while watching it from TV, which is not as cinematic as a direct win against their bitter rivals. But it’s said that the players themselves prefer it that way, and not just because that would confirm there’s zero chance of a dramatic and catastrophic collapse once the title is secure.
Many of the club’s star players are looking at a summer occupied by the FIFA World Cup in North America, and clinching the league this weekend would allow Flick to rotate his bench heavily in the final three fixtures. While the club technically has a shot at hitting the historic 100 point mark or becoming the first side to win every single home game in a season, these milestones are secondary.
Despite Flick’s disappointment of being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League, the club’s faith in the German has not wavered. In fact, negotiations for a contract extension were already well underway before that European exit.
Flick has been vocal about his commitment to the Catalan capital, viewing this as the final chapter of his career. “My plan is to renew. It will be the last stage in my career. I have very good feelings, I want to renew my contract.”
