It what turns out to be a pretty bad look, mandatory challenger for the WBO welterweight title Keyshawn Davis has officially backed out of an ordered fight against titleholder Devin Haney. After all of the talk, when it finally came down to it and the bout was ordered and eventually sent to purse bid, Keyshawn has officially turned down his 25% share of a $8.55M winning bid
by Top Rank for a fight that was being targeted for Oct. 3.With Davis turning down the fight, the WBO will go back to committee
to figure out what their next official order will be.
In the meanwhile Haney seems to have been having some real difficulty in securing a notable opponent, for however vulnerable he’s made out to be. The Haneys have been extremely public about their hit list of potential opponents, but whether it be Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, Rolly Romero, or even a rematch with Ryan Garcia, the fights just aren’t coming together for one reason or another at the moment.
For Keyshawn, he will likely take a lot of deserved criticism for as much as he’s called out Haney, only to politely decline when push came to shove. Rumor has been that Davis wasn’t satisfied with $2.14M share of the pot, but many will think for a shot at the world title on the line combined with the chance to add Haney’s scalp to his resume, this is a fumble.
