Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi tell us that Trey Yesavage is going to be called up to the Blue Jays. He’s expected to be in Toronto tomorrow but likely won’t activated until Monday. And we don’t know who will be going the other direction to make room.
Yesavage is 22 years old. He moved up to the Bisons on August 12th. He’s pitched at Dunedin, Vancouver, New Hampshire and Buffalo this year. Across the levels, he has a 3.12 in 25 games. 22 starts. In 98 innings he’s allowed 54 hits, 8 home runs,
41 walks and 160 strikeouts. He has held batters to a .534 OPS.
Tom M wrote about him back in April. And he was number five on our top 40 prospects.
His fastball sat mostly 93-95 last year, touching 97mph, and in a shorter outing at the Jays’ spring breakout game was consistently around 96mph. It has plus carry that pairs well with his release point and average run. His main breaking ball is an 89mph slider with above average glove side break. The best pitch in the arsenal might be his splitter, which gets really good depth. He can also mix in a downer curve, but it’s more of a show-me fourth pitch.
I really like the idea of him getting a first look in the majors coming out of the pen. Hopefully, he will see how his stuff plays in the majors. If he does well, the team will have to petition Rob Manfred to let him be part of the (knock on wood, Tom) playoff roster.
It will be interesting to see who goes the other ways.
