Dwayne Johnson is undoubtedly a busy man. He’s a successful business man with his own tequila brand, co-owner of the United Football League, and very active with charity work. And even with some recent misfires at the box office, Johnson remains one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.
Now, the 54-year-old is talking about “exploring” a career in country music. But what he’s not talking about is wrestling, which is the very work that brought “The Rock” into public consciousness.
Johnson dropped the
news about his music aspirations during an interview with Rolling Stone published on Tuesday (August 11). The article comes on the heels of Johnson releasing a new ballad, “Your Dad,” which was co-written with one-time American Idol winner Iam Tongi.
Rolling Stone writer Brian Hiatt asked Johnson if he had interest in making more music.
“I’m exploring that now, and I appreciate you asking that,” Johnson said. “As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.”
The Rock added that “the things we do, we must do them for ourselves, and then we must feel it in here, behind our ribcage.”
During his time in WWE, Johnson displayed his love of music by breaking out an acoustic guitar and serenading other wrestlers on TV. He’s also gone farther than that by guesting on the 2021 hip-hop track “Face Off” by Tech N9ne.
However, his biggest musical moment (thus far) came with his role in the original animated version of Moana (2016), which produced a bona fide Johnson-sung hit with “You’re Welcome.”
While speaking to Rolling Stone, The Rock listed off an impressive list of influences, name-checking soul icon Sam Cooke and country outlaw Merle Haggard. He also shared that Willie Nelson once gifted him a guitar as a birthday present.
While whether or not he finds success in the country music world remains to be seen, many wrestlers fans are still clamoring to see him return to the ring. Last year, he was featured prominently in the WWE storyline that saw John Cena finally turn heel during his retirement tour. The Final Boss had also politely told Cody Rhodes that he wanted his soul.
Of course, Johnson would abruptly disappear from WWE, angering many fans by not turning up for the WrestleMania 41 showdown between Cena and Cody. He later explained that he wanted the focus to be on the more active wresters in the angle and not on himself, yet he has still not reappeared on WWE programming.
