As the Jacksonville Jaguars’ executive vice president of football operations, Tony Boselli wears many hats. The Hall of Fame player is now responsible for overseeing player engagement, football technology, football travel and logistics, equipment, sports performance, team security, and football communications, according to the team’s announcement of his hire last February.
One of his additional duties is to help cultivate a winning culture — and one way he does that is by establishing a firm boundary
around the kind of football players the team brings into the building.
At the Jaguars’ annual pre-draft media luncheon on Thursday, head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone were jokingly asked if they had to convince Boselli not to take an offensive linemen with each of their draft picks. Their response revealed the influence Boselli actually has in pre-draft meetings.
I had initial doubts about Boselli considering the magnitude of his job. It was cool of Shad Khan to bring on the former face of the franchise, but as an executive VP? Right away? Considering his lack of experience in an NFL front office, I thought a significant role in a single department would be more appropriate than putting so much on his plate early on. By all accounts, I was wrong! It’s still very early in their tenures, but Boselli seems to have been just as good a hire as Coen or Gladstone.
