Florida State hosts the Virginia Cavaliers for the first time since 2014, a 34-20 Seminole win, on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2. Of the 21 meetings between FSU and UVA, Saturday marks only the third time (2006, 2010, 2026) that neither team is ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
Florida State (2-2, 0-1 ACC) and the Cavaliers (3-1, 1-0 ACC) will meet for the second straight season and the 21st time overall
in UVA’s first true road game of the ‘26 season. FSU and UVA have not met in back-to-back seasons since the 2010 and 2011 seasons, with FSU holding a 15-5 all-time record against UVA, including a 9-1 record at Doak. Virginia’s only victory came in 2011 when the Wahoos defeated the then-No. 23 Seminoles, 14-13. UVA will be trying for its third consecutive win and fourth in its last five meetings with the Noles.
Saturday will be a rematch of last year’s double-overtime loss by then-No. 8 FSU in Charlottesville, which ended with a game-sealing interception in the end zone by the Cavaliers. The victory was UVA’s first over a top-10 opponent at home since defeating then-No. 4 Florida State 26-21 in 2005.
Virginia’s defense comes into the contest allowing just 130 passing yards per game, the fifth-fewest in the nation and the lowest in the ACC, and ranked 14th in total defense, giving up just 247 yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks sport an 84.2 efficiency rating, the lowest in the country. UVA is one of 20 FBS teams allowing fewer than 14 points per game. The Cavaliers have held two of its four opponents without a touchdown and only allowed a total of 52 points on the season.
On offense, UVA quarterback Beau Pribula ranks fifth nationally in passing efficiency (194.1), with 11 touchdown passes, tying for seventh in the country, and tied for fourth in the ACC. Eighteen Cavaliers have caught a pass this season, and each of UVA’s last three games has featured double-digit pass catchers. Pribula has completed 66 of 86 passes and ranks fourth in the nation with a 77% completion percentage.
The Seminoles are coming off their second win of the season after unimpressively beating outmanned Central Arkansas, 34-7. The Noles went 4-for-4 in the Red Zone against Central Arkansas and are now 17-for-17 to begin the 2026 season. FSU’s 17 Red Zone conversions are the 4th most in the country among the 19 teams that are still perfect inside the 20.
FSU QB Ashton Daniels is 58-of-97 passing for 928 yards and six touchdowns, with 142 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. He has accounted for multiple touchdowns in all four games. Daniels is the only player in FBS in 2026 with multiple rushing and passing touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
On the season, the Noles’ offense is ranked a not-so-nice 69th in total offense, 76th in the nation in 3rd down conversions with just a 40.8% rate on 20-of-49 attempts, and tied for 63rd in scoring offense with a 32-point average per game.
FSU’s 126th-ranked total defense is allowing 430 total yards per game, 290 passing yards per game (135th out of 138 FBS teams), and ranked 121st in third-down percentage, allowing opponents to convert almost 46% of the time on third-down attempts.
Florida State is trending as a 2.5-point underdog, with the over/under set at 51.5 points according to FanDuel.

Considering FSU’s defensive problems against talented teams this season, it’s hard to predict the success will begin against a Virginia offense, which has thrown 15 touchdowns to one interception this season while rushing for nearly 200 yards per game.
And that doesn’t even factor in a Virginia defense which is second in the ACC in yards per play allowed (4.1) on a team that has a plus-five turnover differential this season.
FSU will need its home-field advantage to work overtime to make up for what feels like a talent discrepancy, as wild as that is to say considering Virginia has won at Doak Campbell Stadium exactly one time.

This game is FSU’s season. A win on Saturday and the ‘Noles move to 1-1 in ACC play and a chance to really establish some momentum the following week with a suddenly vulnerable Louisville squad. Lose to UVA, and it becomes hard to see Florida State avoiding a tailspin that results in a 3-9 type season.
When you look at the advanced stats, Florida State’s offense is respectable in many areas. It’s still a small sample size, but adjusted for SOS, the ‘Noles have the 18th best offense overall according to FEI, better than Nebraska, Texas, UCLA, LSU, SMU, Louisville, Virginia Tech, UVA, and a host of other teams with better records. Buoying the FSU offense are their explosive plays, ranking 36th in points per drive and 38th in yards per play.
However, there is one area FSU’s offense really struggles in, and that is “busted drive rate” where the ‘Noles rank 90th. A “busted drive” is defined as a drive that gains 0 or fewer net yards, and here in lies Florida State’s biggest problem. FSU’s boom and bust offense does a nice job of putting points on the board in bunches, but when you have a defense that cannot get off the field (even when playing inferior opponents), it is essential that you consistently sustain success on offense. Otherwise, every busted drive results in your opponent receiving better and better field position and chewing up more and more of the clock. Not playing complementary football has been a theme under Norvell, and thus far this season is no exception.
Virginia’s defense admittedly has not faced a murderer’s row, but they rank 13th in defensive busted drive rate. If the busted drive trends for both teams hold, it’s hard to see Florida State emerging victorious. But if FSU can find a way to limit their three and outs and turnovers, the Seminoles might be able to hit enough explosives to outscore the ‘Hoos at home.
For the second time this season, FSU finds itself a short underdog at home, a typical “sharp spot” for betters in Vegas. Similar to the SMU game, I think FSU has its chances but just can’t quite find a way to get the W.

Last year’s loss to Virginia turned Florida State’s season sideways at a pivotal moment. Saturday will do the same thing.
UVA is favored by Vegas — on the road — because they are the better team. The Cavs are the most experienced squad in the country and have an identity on both sides of the ball.
Meanwhile, Florida State is still finding itself. On offense, they are boom-or-bust, producing explosive plays on the ground and through the air but unable to sustain drives. Defensively, FSU’s defensive coordinator Tony White apologized to the offense after the Central Arkansas game for letting the Bears hold the ball for 40 minutes of time of possession. That says all that anyone needs to know about where the Seminoles are on that side of the ball.
Even if FSU technically has better players, as Virginia is ranked 57th in 247Sports’ Talent Composite, UVA has the better, coach, quarterback, and knows how to win. Virginia wins and covers.

All week I’ve been setting up how this is a bad match-up for FSU and how the more experienced, better coach, better quarterback, and better match-up UVA team should win, so naturally I’m going with the ‘Noles.
Boom or bust offenses work better at home than on the road, and this is UVA’s first true road test of the year, as their only game away from the comforts of Charlottesville so far was a neutral-site loss to West Virginia.
FSU 28, UVA 27
- Jon Marchant (season record: 2-0)
Virginia’s Beau Pribula is very good at keeping Virginia ahead of the chains, whether it’s with quick passes or his legs. However, if you can get Virginia into obvious passing downs, that’s where he struggles.
Unfortunately for FSU, the Noles’ defense is terrible on passing downs, so I don’t think it’s a good matchup for FSU as far as that side of the ball goes.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles’ offense is very boom or bust—if they hit an explosive play, they have a chance to score. It’s inherently an inconsistent way to play offense and means you will get a wide range of results from game to game.
Does FSU have a chance in this game? Yes; it depends on 1) whether the defense can get even one or two stops and 2) how many explosive plays the offense can connect on. It’s just not very likely.
Virginia 34, FSU 24
- Tim Scribble (season record: 4-0)
I think we could see a similar game to last year’s loss by Florida State. A shootout at times with Virginia pulling away.
UVA 38, FSU 27
- Tony Morris (season record: 2-0)
It is time to right the ship (hopefully). Sit back and watch this Ous and Wisner masterclass of 200+ rushing yards.
This simply comes down to if the defense can get the stops (even if it’s just a couple). FSU’s offense will do its part.
Noles 31, Cavs 24
- Frank DaNole (season record: 2-2)
This will be the game when everything comes together for the Noles. The Noles are only 2.5-point underdogs for a reason. Vegas knows it, and the Seminoles know it.
The game will follow a similar storyline to what we witnessed last year when Alabama came to Tallahassee. The Seminoles may not dominate at all three positional units for the entire game, but in the end FSU will win the offensive, defensive, and special teams battles because the FSU players will give 110% more effort, they will want it more, and they will play with more heart than their more talented, deeper, and better coached UVA opponents.
FSU Seminoles 35, Wahoos 31
- Perry Kostidakis (season record: 3-1, 3-1 ATS)
I went into this article thinking I would predict an FSU win, but then I went to check my prediction from last week and, after remembering the expectatoin last week was a whistle-to-whistle blowout of Central Arkansas that was nowhere close to being achieved, I can’t sincerely expect a Florida State win tomorrow.
There’s nothing in the body of work that the Seminoles have put together through four games that have me confident they’ll buck the concerning trends they’ve exhibited. Virginia might not have had too many tests so far (failing one already), but the Cavaliers have taken care of business when needed. FSU has not, failing to show any sort of consistent success on either side of the ball. I don’t think it’s impossible that Florida State wins, and I’d be happy to be proven wrong. But when it comes down to it, I think Virginia wins in Tallahassee for just the second time ever, turning up the heat even more to begin this crucial four-game stretch.

Weekly Tomahawk Nation Member Guest Picker
This week’s guest picker is a long-time TN member GolferNole456, who recently celebrated his 13th anniversary since joining on August 21, 2013 at 12:41 a.m., knowing the 2013 season here at TN was going to be special and wanting to be part of it.
Historically, FSU has the upper hand in this matchup with a 15-5 record, but some of those losses were painful. From Dunn being short in ‘95 (I was 4 at the time, and even I knew he was in) to a discouraging OT loss in Charlottesville last season that left us wondering if Squirrell White was still alive after being swarmed by the charging student section.
I want to believe we have a solid chance to come away with a win this weekend, but our defense is a huge liability… in the words of Chuck Downfield from the Backyard Football franchise: “That defense has more holes in it than my dad’s socks.”
I want to provide some statistical support for my prediction, so below are 3 matchups for each team based on season-to-date metrics against FBS opponents.
UVA Matchups:
- UVA ranks 11th in completion %, FSU ranks 117th in completion % allowed.
- UVA ranks 10th in QBPR, FSU ranks 119th in Opponent QBPR.
- FSU ranks 98th in completion %, UVA ranks 1st in completion % allowed.
FSU Matchups:
- FSU ranks 11th in rushes of 20+ yards, UVA ranks 50th in rushes of 20+ yards allowed.
- FSU ranks 19th in passes of 20+ yards, UVA ranks 32nd in passes of 20+ yards allowed.
- FSU ranks 14th in plays of 20+ yards, UVA ranks 32nd in plays of 20+ yards allowed.
To summarize—other than explosive plays, FSU has little advantage on paper… expect UVA to nickel and dime us down the field with an accurate QB and steady run game. Expect the FSU offense to struggle but still be able to pop off a few explosive plays to keep the offense going and get points on the board.
FSU keeps it close for most of the game, but UVA scores late to pull away.
UVA 31, FSU 21
