Husker volleyball had yet another successful week as they still remain undefeated and are the only team that haven’t been beaten yet in NCAA D1. This past week of matches weren’t the best for the team as a whole, but they were still able to pull out wins together as a team.
Even after a week where they didn’t look their absolute best, the Huskers still had players that had big weeks and put up numbers that stood out in the conference.
Sophomore OH Teraya Sigler was named the lone B1G Player of the Week.
She averaged 3.29 kills/set, hitting .391%. She also added 2.57 digs/set defensively. Her best hitting match came against Northwestern where she hit .467%.
JR DS/L Olivia Mauch was the other Husker to be recognized by the B1G this week as she was named Defensive Player of the Week. She helped keep Northwestern and Purdue to a combined .091% hitting percentage. She also averaged 4.00 digs/set. She got her career high of 21 digs against Purdue in Saturday’s match as well. This made her the first Husker Libero to record a 20-dig, 8-assist match since 2023.
UCLA Bruins
2025 Record: 19-13
2025 Conference Record: 12-8 (B1G)
Last NCAA Tournament Appearance: 2025 (Lost to Kentucky in the 2nd Round)
UCLA is coming off a season where they were much improved from their first season in the B1G. In 2024, they had a losing record of 14-15 and didn’t make the tournament. By 2025, they improved to 19-13 and made it to the 2nd round of the tournament, coming out of the toughest conference in the country.
The Bruins have 7 National Championships with 3 of those coming before the NCAA era of women’s sports. Their last championship win came in 2011 when they defeated Illinois. UCLA has been known to be not only a volleyball powerhouse, but sports, and academics, powerhouse. Gymnastics, football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, etc. are just a few that have recently brough home national championships.
This is quite different from Nebraska athletics in recent years. Husker volleyball has been our closest chance at winning a title in all of the big sports. Nebraska and UCLA’s academics are also in two different places. UCLA is known for being one of the top public schools to go to while Nebraska has been at the bottom of the B1G, academically, in the last few years.
The Bruins have started the season 15-4 and have also started at 6-2 in the B1G. They only have one ranked win, though, up to this point. They beat Penn State, at home, on the 16th in 5 sets after losing the 2nd and 3rd sets of the match. Adding Nebraska to that list would be big for them.
5th Year MB Marianna Singletary is getting every little bit out of her eligibility as she spent her first 3 seasons at Texas and her last 2 at UCLA. She averages 2.55 kills/set and is hitting .335% at this point in the season. Being a middle blocker, she also plays good defense. While she leads the team in kills, she also leads in blocks with 108 and is averaging 1.57 blocks/set. Singletary is so dominant that the player with the second most blocks, Eliana Urzua, has 58 blocks.
UCLA’s other top hitter is Senior OH Maggie Li, who also spent time with another team before coming to UCLA. Li played her first two years at California where she played in every match both seasons. While she hasn’t started every match for UCLA, she has still been a big part of their offense.
Li is currently getting 3.30 kills/set, which is almost 1 more kill than Singletary, in a set. She has taken more swings though, and had a few more errors, for a .260 hitting percentage.
Freshman MB Brooke Harwood burst onto the scene this year earning herself a starting role and playing in almost every set so far this season. She currently gets 2.55 kills/set while also getting 0.80 blocks/set. She is the teams 3rd best blocker behind Singletary and Urzua. Sophomore OH Eliana Urzua also averages over 2 kills a set. Urzua is 1 of 5 players averaging over 2 kills/set.
Junior DS/L Lola Schumacher is probably the most recognizable name on this UCLA roster, especially for Husker fans. Schumacher started her career at Wisconsin, but only played 1 season there. She has been a defensive staple in the B1G, being voted for Preseason Libero of the Year. In 2025, she was named to First Team All-B1G Ten.
Schumacher’s digs/set is a little higher than Nebraska’s Olivia Mauch’s as of right now as Schumacher has 3.85 digs/set while Mauch has 3.38 digs/set. They both play similar when it comes to laying out for balls and being where they need to be. They are definitely 2 of the top liberos in the conference and the country.
Thursday’s match will begin at 6:00pm CST at the Bob Devaney Center. The match will be televised on FS1.
