Manuel Neuer committed one costly error and a half as Bayern Munich rescued a 2-2 draw away to Augsburg on Saturday. The calls to replace Neuer in goal are growing louder by the minute, with fans declaring the 40-year-old “finished” at the highest level. Uli Hoeneß, however, thinks otherwise and found time to defend Joshua Kimmich from his own detractors.
When asked after the Bavarian Sports Awards ceremony if Neuer was running out of time after his mistakes, the 75-year-old said “No, not at all.
Everyone is allowed to make a mistake once in a while,” (via Bild as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “And I find the same discussion around Joshua Kimmich to be totally ridiculous. The players who are being hyped up now must first become regular starters at their clubs.”
It is widely known that Neuer might finally retire at the end of the 2026/27 season, with Jonas Urbig planned as the undisputed starter.
