Marc Cucurella hasn’t worn an FC Barcelona shirt since leaving the B team years ago, but the Alella, Catalonia native isn’t ruling out a homecoming. Speaking from the Spanish national team camp ahead of tomorrow’s friendly against Egypt, the 27-year-old was blunt about how he’d handle a call from the Camp Nou.
“If those situations arrive, they are difficult to reject,” he admitted. “I would have to consider it. It’s not just me, I also have to think about my family. Between all of us, we would decide
what is best for us. Right now I’m not thinking about that. If it comes, it will come, and we’ll see what decision is made.”
Life in London has treated him well, and from the outside looking in, he seems genuinely settled at Chelsea. He described his Premier League stint as a great life experience. But he may be feeling the inevitable pull of his home country.
The timing of these comments adds a bit of spice related to the club game during the international break. Spain is at the RCDE Stadium for what Cucurella calls a final test before Luis de la Fuente locks in his squad for the tournament in North America. There is a sense of urgency in the team as the FIFA World Cup is practically around the corner.
“Everyone is going to try to give their best version and from there make things difficult for Luis,” the defender said.
“Playing in Catalonia makes the stakes feel a bit more personal, too. He joked about the flood of ticket requests from his relatives, saying, “a lot of my family will be able to come and see me. Playing here, in a great stadium, the atmosphere is going to be very beautiful.”
