The New York Jets took it on the chin on Sunday. The Buffalo Bills left no doubt as to which was the better team, overwhelming the Jets in a 30 -10 blowout. The Jets were never competitive, with the Bills opening up a 20 – 0 lead before the midpoint of the second quarter. The Jets never got closer than 17 points thereafter, as the Bills dominated the Jets in every aspect of the game. Following one of the best games of his career on opening day against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jets quarterback Justin
Fields was dreadful, completing just three passes for less than 30 yards before getting knocked out of the game with a head injury in the fourth quarter. The Jets offense couldn’t get anything going on the ground or through the air, as they put up just 154 yards of total offense on the day. Bills superstar quarterback Josh Allen had a rare day when he didn’t have to carry the Bills offense as they went off for 224 rushing yards against an ineffective Jets defense. It was the second straight game the Jets have given up 30 or more points. That’s a difficult way to try to win football games. The loss gave the Jets an 0-2 record to start the season.
Now the Jets go on the road for the first time this season. They travel to Florida next Sunday to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A road loss to the Buccaneers would give the Jets a record of 0-3 to start the Aaron Glenn era, a hole few teams recover from to make the playoffs.
The Buccaneers present another tough challenge for the Jets. Led by a resurgent Baker Mayfield, who passed for 4500 yards and 41 touchdowns, the Buccaneers posted a 10 – 7 record and won the NFC South last season. This year they opened the season with a tough 23 – 20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Buccaneers are currently missing two of their top three receivers from last season due to injuries, but veteran Mike Evans and rookie sensation Emeka Egbuka still make up a formidable tandem.
Let’s take a look at the current odds for this game according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The current line has the Jets road underdogs by 6.5 points. The game has an over/under of 44.5 points. On the moneyline the Jets are +260 while the Buccaneers are -320.
If the Jets want to contend for a post-season berth, this week would be a very good time to play a complete game and pull off an upset. Falling to 0-3 rarely presents a path to the playoffs.
