Everyone in Knoxville shrugged off the rumors a few weeks ago, but it appears that it’s happening. According to multiple reports, the San Fransisco Giants are close to hiring Tony Vitello away from Tennessee. The Athletic had the report first, and others are now confirming.
Vitello is 341–131 during his time at Tennessee, completely
reviving the baseball program. It was all capped in 2024 with a national title, with the Volunteers going 60-13 overall. Vitello’s work on the recruiting trail has been elite, with Tennessee landing multiple top five classes over the last few seasons.
The Giants were 81-81 last season.
I’ve got to say, this move would be odd to me. Vitello’s fire and ability to recruit are perfect for the college game, and his program was thriving with a completely renovated stadium. It would be pretty interesting to see how he operates at the MLB level.
This is a developing story. We’ll update when we can.
