Now that she’s shed a few of her record-setting number of simultaneously held championships, there seems to be a bit less vitriol for AEW’s Mercedes Moné. The CEO will always have her critics though, whether
she’s 13 Belts Moné or Zero Belts Moné.
The CEO addressed those critics in the latest edition of her Moné Mag — one of several Mercedes-centered projects she’s launched, mostly because of demand from her biggest fans, but probably also because they really seem to irritate a lot of her detractors. But not in a way that will satisfy many, or any, of them.
Asked if she had anything to say to push back to her belt collector run, Mercedes replied:
“Why would I acknowledge the critics? The goal is shown. It’s been shown. For the people that can’t see it, it’s on them.”
The goal, I believe, is to get heat on her while putting a spotlight on smaller and international independent promotions, and the women who wrestle on them. Moné doesn’t say that, but to illustrate she puts over three of the “discoveries” she made while collecting belts:
“One of my favorite discoveries was Aliss Link from Denmark. Her style is unlike anything I’ve experienced—creative, sharp, and unpredictable. One of my favorite independent matches of the year came against her, and trust me when I say: Aliss Link is someone you need to keep your eyes on.
“Kanji from the UK, wrestling for RevPro, twisted me into shapes I didn’t even know my body could bend into. She proudly calls herself the female Zack Sabre Jr., and for good reason. Wrestling her felt like a high-level chess match—one I can’t wait to play again.
“Then there’s Emersyn Jayne from Scotland. Don’t let appearances fool you. Her intensity, agility, and ferocity were unreal. She represented her country with pride, holding the Discovery Pro Championship for over 1,000 days. But as the CEO of women’s wrestling, I study my opponents like no other— and I always find a way to win.”
At Worlds End on Saturday night (Dec. 27) in greater Chicago, Moné will look to add to her belt total for the first time in a while when she and Athena challenge Babes of Wrath Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale for the AEW Women’s World title.
