Maryland men’s soccer added German defender Farouk Cisse to its roster Saturday, it announced in a release.
The 6-foot-1 freshman defender has played in several places but most notably progressed through the youth ranks of German giants Borussia Dortmund from 2019 to 2023. Cisse was part of the team that won the German U-19 championship in 2022. Over 48 matches with the under 19s, he logged 42 starts and played over 3,000 minutes.
Cisse will look to bolster a defensive unit that lost two stalwarts
from last season in Bjarne Thiesen and William Kulvik. The Terps kick off their season Monday against No. 25 Georgetown.
“I’m delighted to welcome Farouk to our 2025 class. He is an exceptional talent that will impact our team this season,” said head coach Sasho Cirovski in the release. “His youth team experiences with clubs like Dortmund (Germany), Genoa (Italy), Standard Liege (Belgium), and country (Germany) will serve him well as he transitions to the college game. He is comfortable anywhere on the back line, as well as defensive central midfield.”
