The uncertainty around Newcastle United’s midfield is continuing to grow, with Sandro Tonali likely to join Tottenham, and now Arsenal also testing the Magpies’ resolve.
According to The Mirror’s Kieran King and Jack Staplehurst, Arsenal are preparing a second offer for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes after an initial £55 million approach was rejected on Friday.
The Mirror’s report states that Newcastle have made its position clear and told intermediaries that Guimaraes is not for sale, but it’s
unknown if they will surrender at a certain bidding height.
“Arsenal are reportedly preparing a second offer for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after their initial £55m approach was rejected,” The Mirror reported.
Despite Newcastle’s stance, Arsenal are said to be considering a fresh proposal and are expected to present it to the Magpies, according to the Daily Mail.
“Arsenal are preparing a second approach to Newcastle for captain Bruno Guimaraes,” Craig Hope and Tom Collomosse reported. “Daily Mail Sport revealed on Thursday that the Premier League champions were interested in the midfielder and had held talks with his representatives. Those intermediaries have been told by Newcastle’s hierarchy that Guimaraes is not for sale.”
Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen his midfield after Arsenal’s Premier League title, and it looks like the Spaniard has identified Guimaraes as his No. 1 target.
The Brazil international is currently at the World Cup and has not indicated to Newcastle that he wants to leave. Bruno has two years left on his contract and has made 195 appearances for Newcastle since joining from Lyon in 2022, scoring 31 goals.
This news wasn’t expected, and the report comes with Newcastle already facing major questions over their midfield as they are on their way to lose Tonali, with Tottenham already offering £80 million for the Italy international.
Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, meaning any serious Arsenal push for Bruno and the sale of Tonali would only increase the concerns over how much of Eddie Howe’s core survives the summer.
