Why Marcus Rashford Will Be Playing for Manchester United This Season
For the better part of two years, it felt like Marcus Rashford had played his last game for Manchester United.
Now, I think there’s a very real chance we see him wearing red at Old Trafford again this season.
Rashford’s relationship with Ruben Amorim had completely broken down. He was sent to Aston Villa and eventually Barcelona, and it seemed
obvious his United career was over.
But football changes quickly.
Barcelona decided not to make his move permanent, Rashford is back at United, and most importantly, Amorim is no longer the manager.
That gives Rashford something he hasn’t had in a long time at Manchester United: a clean slate.
Michael Carrick doesn’t need to inherit Amorim’s problems with Rashford. His only concern should be whether Rashford can help this team win matches.
I think he can.
Rashford doesn’t need to return as the player expected to carry United’s attack or recreate his 30-goal 2022-23 season. He simply needs to become a useful part of the squad.
He can play from the left, stretch defenses with his pace, attack space and provide another goal threat. His time away from Old Trafford also showed there’s still a very talented footballer there.
Then there’s the transfer market.
United shouldn’t sell Rashford just for the sake of moving him on. Unless a European club makes an offer that works for both Rashford and United, keeping him makes plenty of sense. He’s already under contract and replacing him with a player of similar ability would likely cost millions.
Ultimately, it comes down to Rashford.
If he returns, works hard, accepts his role and earns Carrick’s trust, there’s no reason he can’t contribute to this Manchester United team.
Rashford has been at United since he was seven. For a while, it looked like his story at the club was over.
New manager. Fresh start. Another opportunity.
I don’t think the Marcus Rashford Manchester United story is finished just yet.
