The Spurs and Thunder have already met three times so far this season, with all three games won by the Spurs—a 111-109 victory in OKC on December 13, and a back-to-back home and road series on December 23-25 with the Spurs winning both games by double digits. The Spurs have struggled a bit since the Christmas Day matchup, with the Spurs going 4-5 while the Thunder are 7-2 over the same stretch, only losing to the Suns and Hornets. OKC had some close games in that streak, beating the Jazz in overtime and squeaking out a one point win over the Grizzlies on Friday night, so they have been more vulnerable than they were at the beginning of the season, when they Thunder were just blowing every opponent out of the water. Maybe I should have said out of the arena, since there’s no water in Oklahoma [just a slight exaggeration]. The Spurs will face the Thunder one more time after tonight, on February 4 at the Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs have almost everyone available tonight, except for Devin Vassell, who is still recovering from an adductor strain. That’s been a big issue for the Spurs, who have struggled to find their outside shot without the threat of Devin taking his usual assortment of difficult shots and pulling the defense out of the paint. Vassell has been a little hot and cold lately, but that’s still a big upgrade from the rest of the roster, which has been cold and cold for about a month. Isaiah Hartenstein is out for OKC, and that should be auspicious for the Silver and Black, who have had troubles with his physical play in the previous games. The matchup of Victor Wembanyama against Chet Holmgren favors San Antonio, and Victor could have a big night. Luguentz Dort is out tonight, which honestly is a bit of relief for the Spurs since he has a tendency of falling awkwardly on opposing players legs when he gets beat on defense, which creates some dangerous situations that could result in injuries. Hopefully, Jeremy Sochan can get some run tonight as the Spurs could use his defensive intensity.
It’s a great opportunity for the Spurs to run up their head-to-head record to 4-0 and reclaim the initiative as they compete for top seeding in the west. The halfway point in the season is only a game away, and tonight would be a great time to make a statement. Let’s GOOO SPURS!!!
Game Prediction:
Mark Daigneault will remove two vowels from his last name after the game. As he explains, “It’s just too hard to spell.”
