There is a point in every reconstruction when optimism must surrender the microphone to evidence.
For Juventus, that point is almost here.
The summer has produced encouraging signs: new defensive depth, greater attacking variety, the emergence of Kenan Yıldız, renewed belief in Douglas Luiz, a goalkeeper of Guglielmo Vicario’s calibre joining the squad, and a pre-season in which the Bianconeri were repeatedly forced to solve different tactical problems.
But none of it guarantees anything. The 2026-27
season will ask a much harsher question:
Can Juventus make their potential repeatable?
That is the dividing line between an interesting project and a successful one.
The starting XI is not the story. The squad is.
One of the biggest changes around Juventus is that the conversation is no longer limited to finding the best starting XI. It is about finding the best combination for the opponent. That distinction could become one of Luciano Spalletti’s greatest advantages.
A season involving Serie A and the Europa League will inevitably produce injuries, suspensions, fatigue and tactical mismatches. Juventus will need players who can enter the team without making it feel like an entirely different side. That is why the arrivals of Jhon Lucumí and Guglielmo Vicario matter. Lucumí strengthens the central defensive pool, while Vicario gives Juventus a potential high-level goalkeeper.
The attacking department has also acquired greater elasticity.
Randal Kolo Muani is now a permanent Juventus player, while Jonathan David, Francisco Conceição, Edon Zhegrova, Jérémie Boga, Kenan Yıldız and Kerim Alajbegović give Spalletti markedly different profiles.
That is not simply depth. It is tactical optionality.
And in modern football, optionality is an asset.
The young king and the old guard
The most fascinating Juventus storyline may be the relationship between youth and experience.
Yıldız is no longer merely the youngster everyone wants to see. He is becoming a player around whom the attack can be constructed. Alajbegović is another example of the club’s willingness to introduce young talent into a demanding environment rather than sheltering it indefinitely.
But Juventus cannot build a serious season exclusively around youthful exuberance.
This is where players such as Manuel Locatelli Locatelli, Weston McKennie, Teun Koopmeiners and Federico Gatti become indispensable.
Their job is not merely to perform. It is to stabilize. Because young players make mistakes. Experienced players make those mistakes survivable.
That combination can be powerful.
Yildiz is the season’s biggest internal question
There is a delicious irony in Yıldız’s development. The more talented he becomes, the less Juventus can afford to treat him simply as a talented youngster.
The expectation changes.
If he scores regularly, supporters will demand more. If he creates regularly, opponents will begin targeting him. If he becomes tactically important, teams will attempt to isolate him.
That is when his development becomes genuinely interesting.
Spalletti has already shown that he expects Yıldız to contribute beyond the attacking phase. Against Palermo, the coach praised the player’s willingness to track back and compensate for the positioning of Alajbegović.
That is exactly the kind of education a potential star needs.
The question is whether Yıldız can now add consistency to his talent. If he can, Juventus may have more than a promising player. They may have a genuine difference-maker.
A Douglas Luiz redemption story?
Another subplot deserves attention: Douglas Luiz entered this phase of his Juventus career with his future questioned. Now the conversation has changed.
Spalletti has increasingly trusted him and recently indicated that Luiz would most likely remain, while praising his passing, versatility and ability to understand the game. The coach nevertheless identified defensive coverage as an area that still needs improvement.
That qualification may prove decisive.
Luiz has the technical qualities to make Juventus’ midfield more fluid.
But Spalletti needs him to be reliable without the ball as well as elegant with it.
If that happens, Luiz could become one of the most important pieces of the midfield.
If it does not, Juventus may still find themselves searching for the correct balance.
Spoiled for choice in attack?
This is perhaps Juventus’ most exciting area.
Consider the variety.
- Kolo Muani can attack space.
- David can find space.
- Yıldız can create space.
- Conceição can manufacture space.
- Zhegrova can break a defensive line through individual quality.
- Boga can destabilise defenders.
- Alajbegović can inject youthful unpredictability.
That gives Spalletti something Juventus have sometimes lacked: different answers to the same question.
The danger, of course, is selection. Too many attacking options can become a problem if roles are unclear. Spalletti therefore need to establish a hierarchy without suffocating competition.
The best solution may not be a fixed front three. It may be a fluid attacking rotation, depending on opponent, game state and physical condition.
That would suit the squad.
Championship dreams built in the midfield
If the attack provides excitement, the midfield will determine stability.
- Locatelli remains important because Juventus need someone capable of imposing calm.
- Koopmeiners brings technical quality and versatility.
- McKennie provides intensity and vertical running.
- Douglas Luiz provides passing, fluidity and progression.
- Fabio Miretti offers creativity.
- Khéphren Thuram adds athleticism and ball-carrying ability.
On paper, that is an attractive collection. But football is played in relationships, not spreadsheets.
Who protects the centre when both full-backs advance? Who presses after possession is lost? Who controls the match when Juventus are leading? Who breaks an organized low block? Who prevents a technically superior opponent from dictating tempo?
Those questions will matter more than individual reputations.
And this is where Spalletti earns his salary.
The defense may be a quiet advantage
Juventus’ defensive performances in pre-season have not generated the same headlines as the attacking talent.
They probably should.
Across the principal Australian matches, Juventus defeated Chelsea 1-0, lost 2-1 to Inter and defeated Palermo 2-0. That means two clean sheets in three matches against Chelsea and Palermo, with only Inter finding the net. The subsequent 2-0 victory over Next Gen provided another clean sheet before competitive football begins.
It is obviously too early to draw definitive conclusions from friendly matches. But there is enough evidence to suggest that Juventus are becoming more difficult to break down.
And that could be decisive.
The strongest version of Spalletti’s Juventus may not be the team that scores four.
It may be the team that scores one or two and makes the opponent feel as though three would be required to beat them.
Opportunity or distraction in the Europa League?
There is another layer to this season: European football returns to Juventus, but not in the form the club wanted.
The Europa League is below the Champions League in prestige and financial weight. Yet it offers something valuable: competitive European football and another route to a major trophy.
The challenge is managing it.
Thursday night followed by Sunday afternoon is not a theoretical problem.
It affects recovery. It affects training. It affects selection. It tests squad depth.
This is where the recruitment of experienced players and the integration of younger ones become strategically important.
Juventus cannot simply play their strongest XI every three days. They need a squad capable of carrying the season. And the Europa League could therefore become the perfect laboratory for the depth Spalletti has been building.
Serie A: the real measure
The first five league fixtures provide an immediate test.
- Frosinone away
- Parma at home
- Milan at home
- Sassuolo away
- Atalanta at home
The schedule, confirmed by Juventus, gives the new team very little time to ease itself into the campaign. By the end of those five matches, we should know considerably more. Not everything. But enough.
We will know whether Juventus can impose themselves against newly promoted or less fancied opposition. We will know how the team responds to Milan-level quality. And we will know whether the defensive and midfield improvements visible in pre-season survive competitive pressure.
The table will not be decided in August or September.
But perceptions can change very quickly.
What would success look like?
This needs to be handled carefully.
A club like Juventus cannot realistically define success as simply “improvement.” Improvement is the minimum requirement. The more appropriate hierarchy is:
1. Return to the Champions League.
That should be non-negotiable.
2. Remain involved in the Scudetto conversation.
Juventus do not need to be declared champions in August. They do need to become a credible challenger.
3. Make a serious Europa League run.
The competition should be treated as an opportunity, not a burden.
4. Establish an identifiable footballing identity.
This may ultimately be the most important objective.
Because if Juventus finish fourth but build a team capable of progressing, the season can be considered constructive.
If they finish fourth through inconsistency and short-term survival, the problems remain.
The danger: preseason can lie
This is where we must resist our own enthusiasm.
Chelsea and Palermo were friendlies. Inter were also playing a pre-season match. The intensity, preparation and tactical risk in August are not necessarily comparable with Serie A in October or a European knockout tie in March. Nor should four or five encouraging performances erase the inconsistencies of the previous campaign.
The evidence is promising.
It is not conclusive. That distinction is important.
The new Juventus deserve optimism.
They have not yet earned certainty.
Five players who could define the season
If BWRAO had to put five names under the microscope, mine would be:
Kenan Yıldız
Can promise become sustained production?
Douglas Luiz
Can technical quality become midfield authority?
Randal Kolo Muani
Can he turn movement and athleticism into consistent goals?
Teun Koopmeiners
Can he resurrect and become the creative connective tissue Juventus need?
Jhon Lucumí
Can he help transform defensive reliability into defensive identity?
There are obvious alternatives.
Jonathan David could easily make this list.
So could Conceição.
So could Locatelli.
That, in itself, says something about the squad.
A potential season forecast
Here is where I would deliberately avoid the easy headline:
“Juventus will win the Scudetto.”
It is August.
Football has a sense of humour about predictions.
Instead, the more defensible forecast is this:
Juventus should be considerably more competitive than last season.
The squad has greater variety. The coaching environment is more settled. The attacking options are richer. The defense has been reinforced. The goalkeeper department has hopefully improved. The young talent is increasingly ready to contribute. And the pre-season has demonstrated an encouraging capacity to learn.
But the decisive word is still consistency.
If Juventus discover it, they can challenge.
If they do not, the season could become another exercise in wondering what might have been.
So, what are we really watching?
Perhaps the most fascinating thing about this Juventus is that the story has shifted.
Last season, the question was often:
“What has gone wrong?”
This summer, it has become:
“What could this become?”
That is a much healthier question.
But it is also a more demanding one.
Because possibility creates expectation.
Yıldız cannot remain merely exciting.
Luiz cannot remain merely elegant.
Kolo Muani cannot remain merely dangerous.
The defence cannot merely look promising.
Spalletti cannot merely produce attractive stretches of football.
They must turn those fragments into 90 minutes, those 90 minutes into results, and those results into a season.
That is the journey ahead.
The final word
Juventus have not completed their transformation. They have begun it. And perhaps that is why this season feels different. There is no need to pretend that the club has suddenly become invincible. It has not. There are still questions in midfield. There are still questions about consistency. There is still a transfer window to close. There will be injuries. There will be bad nights. There will be matches in which Spalletti’s ideas are questioned.
That is football.
But for the first time in a while, Juventus appear to possess something more valuable than a collection of individually attractive players.
They appear to possess a direction.
The summer has supplied the pieces. Spalletti has supplied the architecture. Yıldız and the younger generation have supplied the possibility of a future. The experienced players must supply the stability. And Serie A will decide whether the structure can withstand the weather.
So let us leave the prediction to the supporters and the football gods.
