The seventh full-team practice of Kansas City Chiefs training camp took place on a rainy morning in St. Joe. After a brief warm-up, the team went inside to begin practice, but came back out for roughly an hour to finish practice on the grass fields at Missouri Western State University.
After its conclusion, head coach Andy Reid provided an injury update that was the longest it has been all of camp.
He began by sharing that rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who has not practiced since sustaining a bone
bruise during Monday’s practice, is “making improvement.” He added that defensive end Ashton Gillotte, out of practice with a hamstring strain since last Friday, is “making progress.” The same note was made of wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who missed a second practice due to a shoulder injury.
Cornerback Kristian Fulton missed his second consecutive practice on Wednesday with a hip-flexor strain, according to Reid.
During Wednesday’s practice, the linebacker position suffered two injuries that took players in the starting mix off the field.
Second-year linebacker Jeffrey Bassa suffered a groin strain, and veteran linebacker Drue Tranquill was seen off to the side of practice working through an ailment.
“We’ll just see where that goes,” Reid said of Bassa.
“Tranquill just had a little back spasm, so we backed off him there,” Reid added.
In the place of Tranquill and Bassa was veteran linebacker Jack Cochrane, who is entering his fifth season with the Chiefs. He has earned a strong reputation among the coaching staff during that time.
“Jack knows all the positions; he knows everything,” Reid said. “He’s a good special teams player on top of that. You feel comfortable, as a coach, putting him in any of those spots, and he knows that part of it. You need a couple guys like that out there.”
In a positive trend at the receiver position, Rashee Rice took a step forward in his journey to 100% by participating in full-team, 11-on-11 periods for the first time this camp.
“He got a lot of good reps today, which is important,” Reid said of Rice. “We just have to ease him back in and keep working, and we know he’s a good football player. You could see it actually got better as practice went on.”
After a third consecutive day in pads at training camp, a lighter practice is anticipated for Thursday, starting at 9:15 a.m.
