Here at Cat Scratch Reader we have counted down the final 100 days leading up to the Carolina Panthers season opener by for at least the past ten years. We’ve always done this by highlighting the current player on the roster whose jersey number matches the day on the countdown. This year, we decided to change that up a bit by counting down our own list of the Top 100 Panthers of all time. This does not correspond to jersey number, does not need to be somebody who wore a jersey, and will in no way be controversial.
#74. Vic Fangio
I think a lot of people forget or don’t realize that Vic Fangio got his start as a defensive coordinator in Carolina back in the 90s. He’s been so good for so long as part of many prominent organizations, that it’s easy to forget that his first dominant defense was the one he led in the first couple years of the Panthers’ existence. He was hired by the team as their first defensive coordinator in 1995 at the ripe age of 36 after previously serving as the linebackers coach for a dominant Saints unit led by Sam Mills. He led the expansion Panthers to a top 10 defense in both points and yards in their first year of existence, which is a truly incredible feat. He followed that up by coordinating a group that ranked 10th in yards and second in points allowed in 1996, and that group carried the team to a 12-4 record and run to the NFC Championship game. Unfortunately the team spiraled out of control after that, which led to both the offense and defense falling apart. Those disastrous seasons in 1997 and 1998 led to the dismissal of head coach Dom Capers and all of his top staff members, including Fangio.
Fangio has since gone on to become one of the most highly regarded defensive coordinators in the game. He won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2024, which was widely regarded as a long overdue notch on his belt. And it all started in Carolina way back when.
Fangio would always have a special place in the history of the Panthers just by nature of him being the first defensive coordinator the team ever hired. It just so happened that it was a slam dunk hire, at least for two years. He was a victim of the dysfunction of the Panthers in the late 90s, so we’ll never really know what he could have done with an extended tenure. Still, he left a lasting mark on the organization and finds himself as number 74 on the list of greatest Panthers of all time.
