Maryland volleyball capped off its undefeated weekend at the UMBC Tournament Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Retrievers. The Terps also gathered victories over William & Mary and Old Dominion on Friday and Thursday, respectively.
Against Old Dominion, the Terps earned their first win of the season in a three set sweep. Despite the Monarchs getting out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, Maryland never gave in, winning the premier set, 25-23. The Monarchs also opened up the next two sets with a lead,
but failed to capitalize on them. Duru Gokcen starred for the Terps with five block assists, while Haley Melby had a team-high nine kills.
It took Maryland a fourth set to down William & Mary the next day. After a 25-20 win in the first set, the Tribe bounced back in the next, not letting an early 4-0 deficit hinder it from taking the set victory. The Terps snuck by in the next two sets by a combined four points, but it was enough to get the job done. Gokcen had a stellar day again, racking up eight blocks. Meanwhile, Ajack Malual had 13 kills.
Maryland also downed UMBC in four sets Saturday. However, it was the Retrievers that snatched the first set, 26-24. But the Terps won the next three in a row, each by two points. Malual impressed once again, tallying 14 kills, seven digs, four aces and five block assists. Gokcen was named Tournament MVP for her weekend performance.
