When Alec Bohm was struggling, newly named interim manager Don Mattingly took it upon himself to make two changes. He gave Bohm two days off, then moved him down in the batting order. He used that opportunity to give a struggling player some time to “catch his breath” and take some pressure off of him at the same time. Since that day, Bohm has hit .281/.326/.504 in 129 plate appearances, a marked improvement over his paltry numbers when he was going poorly.
The time might be near to do something similar
with Trea Turner. Among those qualified hitters, Turner is currently 152nd out of 156 hitters with a 65 wRC+. He’s been terrible this year, yet remains one of the initial three options the Phillies send to the plate. He should not be there any time soon, but what would that do with the rest of the lineup? If Turner were to move somewhere else in the lineup, likely temporarily, what does the rest of the lineup look like?
Thanks to a death of right handed options the team possesses, the best option to hit second might be Bohm. There’s no way they would hit J.T. Realmuto second in this lineup….right?
