Chris Allen’s second season in charge of YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles women’s soccer team ended on a positive note on Saturday, with Marquette picking up a 3-1 win over Seton Hall. The victory gives Marquette a record
of 7-7-4 overall and 3-4-3 in Big East play. The win over the Pirates gives Marquette one more win than they had the year before in Allen’s first season in charge and ties the Golden Eagles for the same number of Big East wins. It’s the first time since 2022 that Marquette finished a season with at least a .500 record overall, and with three draws this season, their 12 points in Big East play is a two point improvement from a year ago.
The bummer is, of course, that because the Big East went to a four team conference tournament this season, Marquette went into Saturday night already eliminated from the field because they were on a four match losing streak. Now, as it turns out, Marquette would have missed the event if they had played with a six team field as has been the case for the past few years. The Golden Eagles ended up at 12 points and in a tie with Providence for sixth place in the Big East. The Friars picked up a 5-0 win over MU in Rhode Island back on October 22nd as part of that four match skid for the Golden Eagles, and so they can’t even console themselves with the league changing the policies and hosing them out of a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2017.
Marquette had control of Saturday’s match almost from the get-go, recording four shots and two corner kicks before the clock hit 10:00 elapsed. They would ultimately outshoot the Pirates 10-1 in the first 45 minutes, with SHU’s attempt coming in the 26th minute, but MU wouldn’t actually break through on the scoreboard until late in the half. It was Jocelyn Leigh coming through to pad her team lead in goals after chasing down and controlling a flick forward for this really nifty goal in the 43rd minute.
It seems that Seton Hall was able to adjust a little bit to what Marquette was showing them in the first half. After the break, SHU put together the first three shots of the second half, but none of them were on frame. That can’t be said for Megan Murray’s free kick from about 19 yards in the 71st minute, as she feathered the shot with the absolute most altitude that she could get on it and still get it to go in the net.
That opened things up for Marquette a bit, or at least it opened things up for Emily Fix, as she had the next three shots of the match, two of which had to be saved by Seton Hall’s Avery Strohecker to keep the match at 2-0. The Pirates finally found a way to make their adjustments work in the 80th minute with a goal from Olivia Beauvois, but MU’s Aislinn Boyle wrapped up the scoring for the year with a goal in the 87th minute to get MU back to that two goal margin at the final horn.
It’s fitting that Boyle got to put the lid on the season, as she was one of the seven seniors honored by the Golden Eagles on Saturday night. With that, we bid farewell and offer a deep and heartfelt THANK YOU to Adrianna Alberts, Josie Bieda, Aislinn Boyle, Cate Downs, Molly Keiper, Erin O’Keefe, and Abby Ruhland. Thank you for everything you put into Marquette during your time in Milwaukee, and we wish you nothing but the best in whatever comes next for you.
