What is the story about?
Good
morning, foLLks, and happy Friday!
After a second consecutive Thursday off-day, the Mariners kick off their fourth road trip of the season today with a three-game set in the South Side of Chicago. Munetaka Murakami has taken the league by storm in the first six weeks of the season; has anyone else on the White Sox caught your attention in the early going?
In Mariners news…
- Over on FanGraphs, Ryan Blake took a deep dive into Luke Raley’s extreme all-or-nothing approach, which has paid big dividends in the early going this year.
- The M’s added some pitching depth, signing righty Sam Whiting to a minor league deal. Whiting will presumably report to Everett and work out of the bullpen.
- Brent Stecker checked in on how the rehab stints for three key Mariners are going, with Brendan Donovan set to come off the injured list today.
Around the league…
- The injury bug continues to work its way around the league, this time biting the Yankees as Jasson Domínguez suffered a shoulder sprain after colliding with the outfield wall while making a highlight-reel catch. Domínguez also entered concussion protocol, and is expected to be out for at least several weeks.
- In a corresponding move, the Yankees called up top outfield prospect Spencer Jones. At a towering 6’7”, Jones will make his big league debut today, and brings light-tower power along with plenty of whiffs to the table.
- At Baseball Prospectus, Patrick Dubuque examined the fall from grace the Astros have undertaken on the heels of Carlos Correa’s season-ending ankle surgery. ($)
- The Cubs completed a mop of the Reds yesterday, extending their winning streak at home to 15 games. It’s the longest winning streak at Wrigley since an 18-game run in 1935.
- Speaking of the Cubs, it was reported that lefty Matthew Boyd would undergo meniscus surgery yesterday. Unfortunately for Boyd, he also entered the pantheon of bizarre baseball injuries, as he suffered the tear while playing with his kids on Wednesday.
Connor’s picks…
- Wake up, babes, new time waster just dropped! Savantle will test your Baseball Savant mettle, giving you six guesses to name the player solely on their red and blue sliders.
- LLer jakerepp’s brother and his business partners just opened the doors to Gloom Coffee in Pioneer Square. Open Monday through Friday from 8am-3pm, check them out near Flatstick Pub on 2nd and Main.
