I think it’s fair to say that Kentucky Football will go as far as Kenny Minchey can take them. There is a reason the quarterback is the most important position on the field.
And on Saturday night against LSU, the transfer quarterback had a bit of a mixed bag, though he came through when his team needed him most.
The 4th quarter didn’t start great for the QB, but boy did it end phenomenally.
After Kentucky got down into the red zone twice but ended up missing two field goals, it looked like all hope
was lost for the Wildcats. However, Kentucky’s defense was able to force a punt with about a minute and a half left in regulation.
After the LSU punt, Minchey led the Cats back down the field, going 5/7 for 63 yards. He found Willie Rodriguez on 3rd-and-10, but it was only for eight yards. Then Will Stein had a choice to make, and he trusted his kicker.
Adam Zouagui trotted back out as the only player in FBS to miss multiple game tying/winning field goals in the 4th quarter. He struck it from 33, and this time it was true.
Minchey didn’t cool off in OT. After an LSU TD, Minchey delivered a strike to Kenny Darby on 3rd-and-8 to get Kentucky all the way down to the 1-yard line.
Kentucky scored through CJ Baxter, and in what is becoming a signature move for Will Stein, the head coach held up two fingers. After toying with LSU to try and get some yardage with Willie Rodriguez lining up to take the snap, Will Stein called a timeout and put the game back in the hands of his QB.
Minchey ran up the middle to send LSU back home with a loss and Kroger Field into pandemonium.
When it mattered most, Minchey played the best, against a defense that is one of the nation’s best.
Coming into the season, Minchey was not viewed as one of the top QB transfers, but that’s exactly how he’s viewed now. On3’s Wilson Alexander re-ranked the best transfer portal quarterbacks in the 2026 cycle, and Minchey, who was originally No. 11 when he committed to Kentucky, came in at No. 6 in the new ranking.
Minchey is also now part of FanDuel’s list of Heisman contenders that you can bet on. Coming in at +25,000. Minchey is tied for the 20th-best odds to take home the hardware. That’s a pretty significant long shot, but it’s still nice to see him getting some love.
