Nicolò Tresoldi has made it clear that his decision to turn down a call-up from Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp was not an easy one, but the young striker is currently focused entirely on helping the Germany U-21 team.
Tresoldi revealed that he had a lengthy conversation with Klopp after declining the senior-team invitation, and the 21-year-old was grateful for the way the new Germany boss handled the situation.
“He understood it very well. We had a very good exchange. I hope I made a good impression.
He’s a great coach and also a wonderful person. That’s why I’m very grateful to him for the conversation and for his support,” Tresoldi told ranSport (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The forward admitted that speaking with Klopp was an intimidating experience, particularly given the coach’s reputation.
“I was extremely nervous. I immediately told my parents about it, and they were nervous too. But in the end, it was simply a really good conversation,” Tresoldi stated.
Klopp was not the only high-profile coach to reach out to Tresoldi. Italy boss Roberto Mancini has also contacted the striker, giving him a difficult decision to consider regarding his international future.
“It was a similar situation. For me, it’s something special when two such successful coaches take the time to speak with me,” Tresoldi said. “It shows me that I’m on the right track. I’m very grateful to both of them for that,” said Tresoldi.
For now, however, Tresoldi is refusing to get distracted by the Germany-versus-Italy decision. His immediate priority is the Germany U-21 team, which has already won two of its three games.
“We’ll see what happens next. My focus is completely on the U-21 team, not on Germany or Italy. For me, it’s all about these three games. We’ve won two, one more to go. I want to win, score goals, and then we’ll see what happens,” Tresoldi remarked.
With Klopp and Mancini both showing interest, Tresoldi clearly has some major decisions ahead. For the moment, though, the young striker is keeping his attention on the U-21s and letting his performances do the talking.
