What is the story about?
Today marked the thirteenth Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2026 NFL season. It was an action-packed joint training camp session against the New England Patriots. Here’s what I observed up at the New Balance Athletics Center in the shadow of Gillette Stadium from Foxboro, Massachusetts!
EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES
- OVERALL PERFORMANCE: The Pats looked like the better team in the first of these two joint training camp practices. They started strong before the Eagles made up some ground … only for New England to pick it back up and finish on top. It wasn’t like the Birds got thoroughly dominated, though.
- EAGLES INJURY REPORT:
- DID NOT PARTICIPATE:
- DT Byron Young (shoulder)
- New injury.
- CB Jonathan Jones (shoulder)
- WR Johnny Wilson (knee)
- TE Grant Calcaterra (back)
- CB Jakorian Bennett (knee)
- OT John Ojukwu (pectoral)
- RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring)
- CB Shaun Wade (eye/shoulder)
- DT Byron Young (shoulder)
- LIMITED PARTICIPATION:
- WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring)
- Smitty did some work in position drills once again.
- WR Makai Lemon (hamstring)
- Lemon was upgraded to limited after previously being listed under DNP since early in camp. Positive sign. That being said, Lemon didn’t actually suit up and at least take part in position drills. He did do some post-practice running/cutting rehab work. Perhaps he returns to practice early next week following the Eagles’ second preseason game?
- EDGE Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle)
- CB Tariq Castro-Fields (heel)
- WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring)
- FULL PARTICIPATION
- RB Tank Bigsby, CB Mac McWilliams, S Cole Wisniewski, WR Danny Gray, and EDGE Jose Ramirez were removed from the injury report.
- IN-PRACTICE INJURIES:
- Dontayvion Wicks got banged up at one point but he returned shortly after.
- Fred Johnson was spotted leaving practice early with a trainer, according to Martin Frank.
- ACTIVE/PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM
- EDGE Jonathan Greenard (pectoral)
- Prior to practice, Vic Fangio said the following: “I don’t know when Greenard will be back. That injury he got in our weight room is going to take some time to heal.”
- Fangio was also asked if he’s worried about Greenard missing the start of the season. His answer: “Yeah.” Not great!
- EDGE Jonathan Greenard (pectoral)
- RESERVE/NON-FOOTBALL INJURY
- S Tucker Large
- DID NOT PARTICIPATE:
- Prior to practice, a pocket of Eagles green in a sea of Patriots fans got some fairly loud “E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!” chants going. I also thought the Eagles fans in attendance cheering for their favorite team’s arrival were not drowned out by the booing Pats fans. Respectable showing by the Philly faithful.
- JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Hurts ultimately threw three interceptions in this practice, which isn’t ideal when you’re looking at the “box score.” I didn’t see all of them (there’s a lot to look at in these practices) but the one I saw was a perfectly fine short pass over the middle to Dontayvion Wicks that bounced off the receiver’s hands and into the hands of a diving Pats defender (not even fully sure that it didn’t hit the ground). The other also occurred during 7-on-7 drills, which ran concurrent with OL vs. DL 1-on-1s (which had more of my focus since they were happening right in front of me). Picks aside, let’s sort through the good and the bad.
- THE GOOD:
- Hurts’ flashiest completion was a deep ball throw to Elijah Moore, who did a nice job of tracking the ball and winning against coverage from former Eagle Kevin Byard. Moore got up and celebrated by throwing the ball … over a nearby fence (that part was unintentional, I think).
- Hurts threw multiple short and medium completions to Hollywood Brown, who is having his best two-day stretch of training camp. The veteran receiver proved to be a reliable target for Hurts.
- Hurts found a crossing Dallas Goedert in stride.
- Hurts hit Saquon Barkley on a screen pass where the running back was able to create an angle for lots of YAC after making the grab. I feel like I’ve noticed Hurts get better at these short passes.
- Hurts hit Will Shipley, who beat his defender on the wheel route, for an over-the-shoulder grab.
- There was a stretch where Hurts was peppering Dontayvion Wicks for short gains.
- Hurts found Darius Cooper along the left sideline for first down yardage.
- THE BAD:
- In addition to throwing interceptions (nine in camp so far to 10 touchdowns, though I’d argue the eye test says he’s been better than those numbers suggest), Hurts failed to lead the offense to points in the full field scrimmage towards the end of practice. (By contrast, the Pats’ starting offense moved in position for a medium-range field goal.) Hurts threw a ball behind Goedert that got knocked down. Another target to Saquon Barkley on a slant over the middle was batted down.
- THE GOOD:
- While the Eagles’ passing game didn’t produce consistent results, the Pats did struggle against Philly’s ground game. Saquon Barkley seemed to have a good deal of success, as far as I could judge from a practice where tackling isn’t allowed. The Eagles’ offensive line was regularly giving him room to run.
- Practice began with 1-on-1s and the first rep was a marquee matchup between A.J. Brown and Quinyon Mitchell (see videos below). As you cans see, Brown blazed past Q and was in position for the deep touchdown catch … which he failed to make. After practice, Brown “joked” that Mitchell held him, and the photo header for this article does show the brief moment of Mitchell grabbing Brown’s pants. But the refs at practice didn’t throw a flag, so, Mitchell ultimately got the stop. It was funny to hear Pats fans initially excited for what they thought was a catch, only for them to be disappointed. Eagles fans in attendance then loudly cheered the incompletion.
- More 1-on-1: Riq Woolen was beat on a shorter route before breaking up a downfield throw on his next chance. Woolen taunted Pats fans after that breakup … Cooper DeJean got shook by DeMario Douglas on a double move and then later allowed another catch to Douglas on an out-breaking route … Darius Cooper had a nice release to get open for a short catch and then also caught a deep pass from Hurts … Ambry Thomas got cooked by former Eagle Mack Hollins deep to allow a touchdown.
- A.J. BROWN UPDATE: If you don’t want to hear about him, you can simply skip this section. Any idea that Brown is cooked simply isn’t true. He does not look physically diminished; he gave the Eagles’ defense plenty of trouble today. Sure seems like his down year last season was more about effort (a lackthereof) than pure on-field decline.
- Riq Woolen had an excellent spring but he hasn’t been as good in camp. It felt like the Pats came into this practice planning to go at him over and over … and that strategy largely worked. He got beat by A.J. Brown to allow a downfield completion (see video where an unblocked blitzing Jihaad Campbell is ready to light up Drake Maye, debatable if the throw would’ve gotten off in a real game scenario). He got beat on a rep where Romeo Doubs dropped the ball. He just seemed to be the guy in coverage whenever Maye really tested the Eagles’ secondary.
- Already touched on this a little but DeMario Douglas got the better of Cooper DeJean today. Rare to see DeJean get beat with frequency.
- Jalyx Hunt continues to look awesome. He beat Will Campbell like a drum on back-to-back reps today. The first was a clear “sack” where Maye couldn’t even get the ball off. The second was a very quick pressure that forced Maye to throw to his hot route. Hunt’s going to have a big year.
- Jalen Carter was in position for a TFL on a Pats running play. Looked like one of those vintage Brandon Graham crashing down on the run from the weak side plays.
- Will Shipley had his best practice of the summer … and perhaps his best ever in the NFL. He was involved in multiple good passing plays for the offense in addition to having a good run or two. He saw a good amount of first-team work, perhaps in part because Bigsby was recently dealing with a toe injury. Shipley is comfortably RB3.
- OL vs. DL 1-on-1s:
- Tyler Steen got driven back by Christian Barmore but the Eagles’ right guard managed to stay in front. Steen generally looked good to me in 1-on-1 and I think he’s had a nice summer. Lane Johnson agrees (see tweet below).
- Cam Jurgens held up well against Cory Durden.
- Landon Dickerson was driven way back by old friend Milton Williams. Not used to seeing Dickerson handled like that. Dickerson also got pushed back in Hurts’ lap by the aforementioned Durden in team drills. Feeling a little concerned about No. 69.
- Drew Kendall failed to anchored well against a bull rush from Casey Rogers (?) but he did manage to stay in front of the defender. In their next go-around, Kendall totally stonewalled the Pats defensive lineman.
- Markel Bell anchored well against a rush from Jesse Luketa and drove him into the ground. Bell struggled more in team drills, where he allowed some wide angle pressure.
- Myles Hinton is probably not making this roster. He really struggled in these drills. Got cooked by an inside move from Bradyn Swinson.
- BACKUP QUARTERBACK BATTLE UPDATE: Andy Dalton was first up at QB2 today. Dalton got off to a bad start, overthrowing Eli Stowers downfield. He later rebounded with a strong sequence where he found Quez Watkins along the right sideline and then had good back-to-back anticipation completions to a crossing Samari Toure to the left and a crossing Danny Gray to the right. Dalton also completed a pass to Erik Ezukanma along the right sideline and celebrated with a first down signal. Tanner McKee started stronger than he finished. McKee threw a good comeback ball to Gray along the right sideline before hitting a wide open Stowers, who managed to get wide open 15+ yards down the field (seems like the rookie tight end’s best plays have come on coverage busts). McKee hit Will Shipley on a short curl where the running back turned upfield for lots of YAC. McKee had a back shoulder completion over the middle to Toure where I’m not sure if he meant to do that (if so, smart, he kept the pass away from the defender) or if it was just an off target pass that required an adjustment. McKee then failed to lead the offense on a drive in the scrimmage scenario and ended practice with an interception to Kindle Vildor (a former Eagle, albeit briefly).
- Andre’ Sam had a diving interception on a Tommy DeVito throw over the middle that got tipped by Kayshon Boutte.
- Not many reps today for Cole Payton, who completed some short passes before throwing an interception to John Saunders Jr. The safety jumped a route for the pick.
- No intense fights but Willie Lampkin and Pats rookie Gabe Jacas were separated by McKee at one point. There was also a scrum during a special teams period.
- Outsourcing an OL vs. DL 1-on-1 session that I didn’t get to see:
- Jake Elliott’s had a good camp; he was 25/26 in camp entering today. But the Eagles’ kicker missed two of his five attempts on Wednesday (hard to tell the distances from the angle where media was allowed to watch practice from). The first miss was wide right while the second went just to the outside of the right upright. This despite a slight wind blowing to the left. Now he’s 28/31.
