It might be a bit early to go sharpy on the Bill Belichick era at UNC, but this is going to be tough to survive: according to WRAL, Belichick’s program is facing some major allegations:
- Possible drug use on the job by Belichick’s son and defensive coordinator, Steve.
- That Belichick may have supplied drugs to at least one player.
- That a female member of the recruiting staff may have had a sexual relationship with a UNC player.
- That there may have been romantic or sexual relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff members.
Lombardi’s attorney, Tom Mars, said this last week to the Athletic: “If UNC had grounds to fire Michael for cause, they wouldn’t need to conduct such a far-ranging, lengthy witch hunt. They would have done so by now. I think the motive behind the investigation goes further than a $1.5 million buyout. After all, UNC could
fire Michael (or the athletic director or any head coach) for no reason at all just by paying their buyout. In today’s world, $1.5 million is just a drop in the bucket, so there must be other reasons behind this multimillion-dollar investigation.”
As for the younger Belichick, his dad says it’s a “medical situation,” and that he can’t comment on it, which is fair. However, it’s also a bit of a dodge. It would be wise for Belichick and UNC to come clean about this, whatever it is, if they have any hope of rehabbing their reputation once more.
