Leon Goretzka’s situation at Bayern Munich remains uncertain. Approaching the final 6 months of his deal, there do not seem to be any discussions about a contract renewal yet. Furthermore, the current
sporting management duo of sporting director Christoph Freund and board member for sport Max Eberl initially phased Leon Goretzka out of the squad in their first summer transfer window, with head coach Vincent Kompany not even including him in the matchday squad for the team’s first game of the season. That has all changed since and Goretzka has mostly worked himself back into the regular rotation in midfield, but have things changed enough that the sporting management would want to give him a new contract?
Regardless of whether or not this is the case, only good things are said about the former Schalke 04 player publicly. For instance, Freund praised Goretzka and his importance to the squad ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga clash against VFB Stuttgart:
“Leon has played a lot of games [this season]. We know what we have in him,” Freund expressed, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “He’s also an important personality in our team. He’s always helped the team and is crucial to the squad. He has a lot of experience and won many titles, and he brings that to the table. He’s an important part of our team when he’s on the pitch.”
It would naturally be counterproductive in every sense to speak negatively about Goretzka or any member of the squad publicly. So how much Freund and Co. value the 30-year-old in the squad may only be revealed in the aftermath of whether or not he gets a new contract.
