Jan Tomaszewski is tired of seeing Robert Lewandowski stuck in what he views as a disrespectful situation at FC Barcelona and has urged him to quit the team in the middle of the season.
The legendary Polish goalkeeper, a hero of the 1974 World Cup, went on a scathing tear during an interview with Super Express, telling the 37-year-old striker to pack his bags and regain his dignity elsewhere.
“Robert, behave like a man. You are not just anyone. You are the most famous Pole in history, and you allow
yourself to be treated like this?” Tomaszewski asked in a searing interview.
This comes as Lewandowski started the critical second leg in the UEFA Champions League on the bench against Atlético Madrid. Ferran Torres repaid the coach’s faith with a first-half goal, although the Pole entered in the second half as a substitute for him. Barcelona won the match 2-1 but were eliminated due to the first-leg loss. Even though the Catalans are heading towards the trophy in La Liga, the Champions League elimination still stings.
At the same time, the narrative around Lewandowski is shifting toward a cheaper, longer renewal or a quiet exit. His agent, Pini Zahavi, is heading to town to iron out the details of a potential extension through 2027. But Tomaszewski thinks the striker should walk away, with immediate effect.
“If Robert leaves now, let Barcelona do whatever they want and win the Spanish championship,” he argued. “I am convinced that Robert, whether he plays in MLS or another team, will be regarded as he deserves.”
The former keeper then turned his sights on Hansi Flick, blaming the German manager for the European collapse against Atlético. He ridiculed Flick’s habit of inspecting the pitch the day before a game, questioning whether he was “the gardener or the coach” after seeing him touch and smell the grass only to complain to UEFA. “The German gentleman is responsible for what happened in the tie against Atlético, and he has shown that he has little in common with elite football,” Tomaszewski claimed.
The legend finished his rant with a heavy dose of sarcasm directed at the club’s hierarchy. “I propose to Messrs. Laporta and Deco that they nominate the German for the Nobel Prize for having ruined such a team,” he said.
