According to a report from Tz journalists Philipp Kessler and Vincent Tschirpke (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich and Dayot Upamecano seem set on a salary and bonus structure, but a very low release clause request has the Bavarians hesitant to move forward.
The subject of a signing bonus is also still an issue, but even aside of those matter, Bayern Munich remains optimistic that a deal will get done:
The management of Dayot Upamecano is demanding a base salary of €16m plus up to €2m in bonuses.
The sticking point, however, is the release clause that the player’s camp wants included in the new deal. The clause being discussed would be worth €65m, which interested clubs could activate starting in the second year of the new contract. Upamecano also wants a hefty signing fee. Nevertheless, Bayern remain optimistic they will be able to reach an agreement with the Frenchman.
BFW Commentary
If true, a release clause of €65 million after just two years seems ludicrous in this situation and Bayern Munich is right to be wary of it. Even if he does not get any better, Upamecano’s value on the open market will exceed that figure.
At €65 million there is virtually no shot that the release clause would not get triggered and the Bavarians would be in a position of having to negotiate again with Upamecano. When factoring in that there is still reportedly an issue with a signing bonus as well, it makes it hard to understand why there is so much confidence about an agreement getting reached.
Time will tell and fans will have to wait to see who wins this battle of wills. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain appear to be serious options for the Frenchman, with Chelsea FC and Manchester City also reportedly ready to join the party to compete for the center-back.
