Everton have been drawn away at Preston North End in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup. The Lilywhites finished in 14th place last season in the Championship, and beat Huddersfield in the first round of the competition on penalties this last weekend.
In case they sound familiar, Preston was the club that David Moyes played at to close his playing career before becoming their manager for four years, joining the Toffees in 2002 after 234 games in charge for Preston.
The two sides last met twenty two years
ago in this very competition but in the third round, when Moyes was in charge, with the Blues prevailing 2-0 at Goodison Park with goals from Lee Carsley and Marcus Bent.
The Toffees’ route to Wembley will start on either Tuesday August 25th or Wednesday August 26th, just after their season opener at the Hill Dickinson Stadium against Crystal Palace.
The Blues have never won this competition in their 141-year history, but have been beaten finalists twice, against Aston Villa in 1977 and to Liverpool in 1984. Their run in the tournament last season lasted only until the Third Round when they were knocked out at home against Southampton 6-5 in a sudden-death penalty shootout after the two sides had tied 1-1 after regular time.
Eleven Premier League clubs not competing in European competitions entered the Cup in Round Two. The Carabao Cup remains regionalised in the early rounds with the draw split into a southern and northern section until Round Three.
