A bit of deja vu for Liverpool Women as they faced defeat in another pre-season match on Sunday, this time to West Ham, again at Melwood.
Even after an exciting draw earlier in the week against Manchester United showed some life within the squad, that life wasn’t able to survive the three days after when the Hammers came to town.
The match was again closed to the public, but the club website reported on the action, with Ffion Morgan and Seraina Piubel contributing to West Ham’s scoreline. Piubel even
scored a brace in another showing for new goalkeeper Rafaela Borgraffe, as Rachael Laws deals with injury.
It wasn’t without the Red Women trying, either, as Borgraffe kept Camila Saez from scoring in an early West Ham counterattack. Cornelia Kapocs was denied once again after collecting a Gemma Bonner pass, with Ines Belloumou blocking the effort before it could help Liverpool.
Ffion Morgan’s goal came just after the half hour mark, winning a long ball pass and finishing without much trouble. Piubel’s brace came quickly in the second half, scoring first after being fed in the box by Riko Ueki, and the second coming after an unimpeded charge down West Ham’s left side.
Even with players like Fuka Nagano and Leanne Kiernan coming on at the hour mark, the damage was done and the Reds were unable to come back from the 3-0 scoreline.
It’s pretty hard to feel excited for the upcoming WSL season when the results have shown that the club is still pretty clearly in turmoil so I suppose we’ll all be happy to not get relegated next season. Everton at Anfield is a notoriously fraught match for the Women, and with that one quickly approaching and only one more pre-season match between it, here’s hoping they figure themselves out fast.
