We are 70 days away from the Kansas City Chiefs‘ season-opening game against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football” in Week 1.
The No. 70 jersey is being donned by rookie minicamp tryout signing Kahlil Benson, who is seemingly in the mix for the Chiefs’ starting right tackle job after going unsigned on draft weekend.
There’s a path for a Chiefs player to give the uniform a more memorable place in franchise history than it currently has.
All-time Chiefs who wore No. 70
1. Mike DeVito (2013-2015)
2. Jim Nicholson (1974 – 1979)
3. Marcus Spears (1997 – 2003)
4. Jim Rourke (1980 – 1984)
Honorable Mention
Alfonso Boone (2007 – 2008)
Bryan Witzmann (2016-2017)
Keleche
Osemele (2020)
DeVito was only able to play in two of the three seasons he spent in Kansas City; the Achilles injury he suffered to open the 2014 season, paired with a similar injury to star linebacker Derrick Johnson, became an unfortunate factor in the only season the Chiefs missed the postseason under head coach Andy Reid (until 2025).
The season before, DeVito started 13 games on the front line of an impactful defense that helped secure the team’s playoff berth in 2013. In 2015, he started five games and earned a career-high six tackles for loss, helping Kansas City recover from a 1-5 record to a Wild Card round win.
70: The number of team passing yards allowed in the Week 7 win over the Raiders last year
The Chiefs’ defense had an all-time dominating performance last year against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7. The 31-0 shutout victory featured the Raiders earning just three first downs and totaling 95 yards (70 through the air, 25 on the ground).
The Raiders realized the mess they made by hiring Pete Carroll as head coach and corrected it this offseason, but this game still stands as proof of concept for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. His unit is capable of dominant performances when the run defense on first and second down forces third-and-longs — then the pass rush takes care of business.
In this game, Las Vegas went 0-for-7 on third down and missed its only fourth-down attempt as well.
