The Mariners, lifted by two Jorge Polanco homers and a pair of doubles from their twin homegrown superstars, achieved the seemingly-impossible and beat Tarik Skubal and the Tigers to even up the ALDS.
Now they have to find a way to win at least one game in a hostile environment—and not just with regards to a raucous Detroit crowd. While the skies in Seattle today are cornflower blue on a golden autumn day, in Detroit it looks a little more like the Wizard of Oz, pre-Technicolor. We’ll keep you updated on any potential weather delays. For now, the game will be delayed past its original 1:08 PT start time, but we don’t have an exact time yet. The Tigers account currently just says “updates will be provided when available.”
Lineups:
The big news here is Josh Naylor is in the lineup after not traveling with the team. No word on baby Naylor yet, but for today, he’s here and he’s playing.
The big news here is Kerry Carpenter has moved into the leadoff spot, specifically so Dan Wilson has to spend Gabe Speier sooner than he might like as Carpenter is murder on starters the third time through the order (.329 BA, .507 SLG). It also splits Carpenter off from the other lefties in the lineup, with Keith and Greene separated by Torres. The nineteenth at-bat in this game will be a key one.
Pitching Matchup:
Logan Gilbert and a rain delay on the road, name a less iconic duo. Hopefully the rain will stay away enough after this initial delay that there doesn’t have to be a mid-game delay. In that case, I think we all agree that Detroit just has to forfeit on account of not having a roof, right? The Tigers are a good fastball-hitting team, and will look to pounce on Gilbert before he can get to his secondary offerings, especially his splitter.
The Tigers will start Jack Flaherty, who has had sort of a Jekyll-and-Hyde season. He’d have great stretches giving up between 0 and 3 runs, punctuated by some blowups where he gave up bunches of runs. As Jake pointed out in the series preview, everything depends on his command over the two breaking balls, as his fastball can be hittable.
