John Harbaugh not leaving anything to chance as his Giants era begins | The Record
This was the early evening before the New York Giants began training camp at The Greenbrier Resort and John Harbaugh was walking the grounds for the first time.
The head coach and several team officials were admiring the picturesque setting with the mountains of West Virginia as the backdrop when someone half-jokingly suggested that the practice fields looked longer than 120 yards.

Q: That
was the start of his era with you, and now the same begins with Jaxson Dart. Where is the line between the importance of the quarterback-head coach relationship and him just being one of 53 on the roster?
Harbaugh: To me it’s both, but everybody understands it. He is one of 53. He’s part of the team. He’s a teammate. He’s a player. The guys like Jaxson, Joe [Flacco], Lamar [Jackson], they all understand that so well. That’s why the players love them so much. But the other side of the coin is he’s the quarterback. He’s got to know the most. He’s got to do the most. He has the most impact probably on the game of anybody. So, that part of it is just kind of understood. But those guys, man, they’ve been doing it their whole life. They embrace it.

Who’s the player not enough people are talking about who’s going to make a big impact for the team you cover?
Carroll: Isaiah Likely was one of the Giants’ biggest free-agent acquisitions, as the tight end signed a three-year, $40 million deal. That type of deal doesn’t usually lead to a player not being talked about enough. However, in a New York media market adoring the Odell Beckham Jr. reunion, while at the same time fixating on Malik Nabers’ return from a torn ACL, Likely has quietly been putting in the work becoming quarterback Jaxson Dart’s go-to pass catcher. As my colleague Dan Duggan noted, Likely was Dart’s favorite target this summer with 44 catches in 11-on-11 team periods during camp. With or without Nabers’ return in Week 1, Likely figures to be a big piece of this offense.

Given how small an NFL player’s career window typically winds up being, how eager is Burns to win?
“Oh, I’ve been at that point…I don’t really give a f— about surprising nobody,” he said. “I’m just focused on our team, our opponents and get a dub as many times as we can throughout the season — and getting to the big dance. Surprising people and putting the world on notice? I don’t give a f— about none of that. Not anymore.
“I used to want to prove people wrong and prove this and prove that. But I got to a point where it’s like now, bro, people are going to say something regardless of whether you’re good or whether you’re bad. So it really doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is the work that’s in front of you. I’m not doing this to prove to nobody else. I do it more so to prove to my guys and myself that we can win.”

The next coordinator in line is Dennard Wilson, who will be making his Giants debut Sunday and he doesn’t care about Giants-Cowboys history.
“We’re going to be unapologetic on how we play,” he said. “We’re going to be decisive in what we do. We’re going to play with an edge. We’re going to play with toughness. We’re going to bring violence. That’s our M.O. That’s how the guys have been going out — doing their work every day, their daily business. And that’s how we’re going to play.”

What we’re hearing on the Giants: It’s the first game of the John Harbaugh era. It’s QB Jaxson Dart’s first opening game start in the NFL. The Giants say they believe they have their signal-caller and coach and that it will lead to wins. Immediately. “I want to do something special. And all the guys in the locker room are, too. We’re starving for this,” Dart said.
Bold prediction: Giants rookie WR Malachi Fields will lead the team in receiving yards. It remains to be seen exactly how close to 100% Malik Nabers (knee) is. Fields had a great camp and the Cowboys CBs DaRon Bland and Cobie Durant are beatable.

Taylor ranked fourth on Iyer’s list, going down as the greatest defensive player in league history. The only other defensive players included in the top ten were Reggie White (5th) and Aaron Donald (8th). Only Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, and Tom Brady ranked ahead of Taylor. Michael Strahan is the most recent Giants player to make Iyer’s list. The NFL’s sixth-leading sack-getter ranked 81st.
Most of the Giants players included came long before the modern era of the NFL. Mel Hein, who played for Big Blue from 1931 to 1945, was the earliest player to make the cut, ranking 90th. Hein played both center and linebacker and remains the only offensive lineman in NFL history to win MVP. Linebacker Sam Huff (ranked 136th), offensive tackle Roosevelt Brown (98th), and safety Emlen Tunnell (76th) all played together for the Giants in the 1950s, winning a championship in 1956. Each player is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
