Something dumb about the 2025 Mariners is that despite winning more than half of their games, they have been walked off 10 times compared to the 8 times they have walked off an opponent. But at least this one came in game one of a road trip rather than right before the boys had to get on a plane ride. They should be able to wipe the slate clean as they try again today.
For today’s game, they’ll hand the ball to Logan Gilbert, who’s coming off a career-high 13 strikeouts when he faced the Athletics
on Sunday. That outing helped him maintain the MLB lead in strikeout percentage among starters who’ve thrown at least 50 innings this year. Based on how the Guardians have built their rosters in the past and the fact that the faces of their franchise are Steven Kwan and José Ramírez, you might think Cleveland would be a difficult test for a strikeout pitcher. But the 2025 Guardians are not contact mavens, striking out 22.5% of the time, a bit more than league average.
The Guardians will turn to Gavin Williams, who isn’t not a strikeout pitcher, but was Cleveland’s starter on June 13 when the Mariners had tied their season low for strikeouts, with three. Williams only had one K (Jorge Polanco) over his four innings that day.

Ben Williamson was 4 for 6 with two doubles in Tacoma’s 11-9 win over El Paso (Padres) last night. In an unsurprising turn for someone with his makeup, it really seems like B Willy learned some things during his time in MLB. In his 18 games since his demotion, he’s hitting .397/.477/.644. Sure some of that is the PCL being a friendly environment to hitters, but his wRC+, which accounts for that, is at 181. And even more encouragingly, he’s walking 12.8% of the time compared to just a 10.5% strikeout rate.
Up in Everett, Jonny Farmelo hit his sixth dinger of the year in 107 PAs.
This Day in Mariners History
- 1992: The Mariners turn the eighth triple play in their history, one of their silliest. Jay Buhner caught a deep flyout in right field, throwing from his knees to 2B Harold Reynolds who relayed to SS Omar Vizquel. Meanwhile, Randy Milligan and Brady Anderson were trying to return to their respective starting bases. Milligan was called out for passing Anderson and Vizquel stepped on second to force Anderson (9-4-6). Baltimore wins ayway.
- 1993: Alex Rodriguez signs with the Mariners after a long negotiation process following his selection as the first pick overall in the 1993 June Draft.
- 2013: Taijuan Walker earns a win in his Major League debut at 21 years, 17 days, allowing 1 unearned run in 5.0 innings and becomes the youngest Mariners starter to win his MLB debut. There are a few fun highlights in the video below.
- 2020: The Mariners send Austin Nola, Dan Altavilla, and Austin Adams to San Diego in exchange for Ándres Muñoz, Ty France, Luis Torrens, and Taylor Trammell. Ask me what happened next.
- 2023: The Mariners beat the A’s for their 21st victory in August, a new franchise record for the most wins in a single month. Don’t ask me what happened next.
