When the Toronto Tempo was putting together their initial roster, they signed guards Marina Mabrey and Brittney Sykes to multi-year free agent contracts as cornerstones of the expansion team.
Earlier this week, it was this duo who led the way in Toronto’s 86-73 win over the Seattle Storm marking the franchise’s first WNBA win. Mabrey was the game’s high scorer with 26 points while Sykes added 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in a team-high 32 minutes.
It’s only been two games but Sykes is already
exceeding her career averages in points, rebounds, and assists. While playing on an expansion squad can be a challenge, this is a great opportunity for Sykes to showcase her all-around game after spending years being labeled as a defensive stopper.
No matter what happens, Sykes will be etched in history with the first points in Tempo history.
Toronto is in Los Angeles tonight and we’ll keep you updated on Sykes and the Tempo throughout the season.
